The Schützenpanzer PUMA, introduced into service with the German Bundeswehr in 2015, was selected for modernisation to have the latest technologies implemented to become part of Germany’s commitment to NATO’s Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF). The PUMAs were to be upgraded with advanced systems including encrypted radios, digitised communication suites, integrated data-sharing capabilities, support for reconnaissance drones, and a dual Spike LR (MELLS) missile launcher. This modernisation programme was approved for completion by 2023 for 40 PUMAs. Following this, the Bundeswehr announced plans to have a total of 266 PUMA VJTF standard as part of the Division 2027 growth plans to create a modernised mechanized division by 2027.
Introduced in Update "Dance of Dragons", the PUMA VJTF differs from the earlier PUMA primarily through the inclusion of the Spike-LR II guided missile system. Housed in a twin launcher, the VJTF variant can engage targets with two missiles before needing to reload. Aside from the Spike missiles, the vehicle retains the same 30 mm autocannon, MG4 machine gun, armour protection, and mobility characteristics as the base model.
