The MSC (short for Maquette Simplifiée de Char) is an early prototype of the French Leclerc MBT. In the 1960s, France began searching for a replacement for the aging AMX-30 tank. In 1978, France and Germany launched a joint project to create a new MBT, but disagreements over the basic concept caused the project to be abandoned. In 1982, France resumed the independent development of a new main battle tank through the Engin Principal de Combat (EPC) program. In 1986, GIAT Industries presented the MSC prototype. It was a conceptual demonstrator built to test new technical solutions.
Unlike fully functional combat prototypes, the MSC was not a complete tank; however, it served as an important foundation for shaping the design of the future Leclerc tank. Trials of the MSC in the early 1980s validated several advanced solutions, including modular armor and an autoloader that increased the rate of fire and reduced the crew size to three. Development based on the MSC prototype continued through the late 1980s, and mass production of the Leclerc began in 1991.
The MSC was inroduced in Update 2.47 "Leviathans". The tank incorporates advanced solutions, including composite armor, an autoloader in the turret, blow-out panels, an advanced fire-control system, and good mobility. Drawbacks include a vulnerable lower front plate and a limited selection of ammunition.
