Algérie was a heavy cruiser and the sole ship of her class. She was the most advanced heavy cruiser in the French Navy. She was laid down on March 19, 1931, launched on May 21, 1932, and commissioned on June 15, 1932. Designed in response to the Italian Zara-class cruisers, the Algérie differed radically from all previous French heavy cruiser designs. Her armor scheme incorporated a full armor belt, and she was fitted with state-of-the-art steam superheating boilers that increased her speed. New 100-mm dual-purpose guns were also installed. Her name also marked a departure from tradition; while ships were usually named after prominent figures, the Algérie was named after a colony.
Initially based in Toulon, the cruiser was transferred to Dakar before World War II broke out. There, she participated in the hunt for German commerce raiders and later engaged in convoy escort duties. Following the fall of France, the Algérie remained with the Vichy fleet and returned to Toulon; however, she did not participate in active combat operations. After France was occupied, the high command ordered the scuttling of the fleet. On November 27, 1942, the cruiser was scuttled with explosives and set ablaze. She settled on the seabed and continued to burn until December 16. In 1943, the Italians attempted to raise the cruiser to scrap her, but they failed. The wreckage was finally raised in 1949, and the ship was scrapped by 1956.
The Algerie was introduced in Update 2.59 "Sky Odyssey". The cruiser features heavy armor, decent mobility, and powerful main-battery guns with effective shells. However, its anti-aircraft battery is weak.
