As one of the armed forces to develop light tanks during the Cold War, the People's Liberation Army Ground Forces (PLAGF) has utilized the ZTQ62 since 1962, and it has been exported to multiple foreign countries as means to enhance their firepower. However, the complicated political environment during the Cold War also provided insights to PLAGF officials regarding the essential need for a fire-support vehicle for units in the floodplains of southern China and Indochina, as well as for units stationed on plateaus where the altitude decreases the overall performance of MBTs. This eventually led to future light tank solutions provided by NORINCO after they gathered suggestions from PLAGF units, as well as combat history from the late 1980s, which revealed an abundance of individual anti-tank weaponry. While the development history has yet to be disclosed, NORINCO came up with two designs, one of which, now known as the VT-5, became the export solution for a so-called "Lightweight MBT" for customers, with Bangladesh currently being the only customer of the VT-5 to replace previously upgraded Type 59/69 fleet.
The basic variant of VT-5 is introduced as part of Update "Hornet's Sting", and represents the deal of 140 vehicles sent to Bangladesh since the 2020s. The light tank icon shown in-game might let down the enemy's guard at first glance. However, as soon as the foes are being suppressed by the fast reload rate at different ranges, players will have to find another way to disable VT-5 before it causes further devastation to the team.
