In July 2018, the Ministry of Defence of Taiwan started a modernisation programme to replace the ageing CM11 and M60A3 TTS tanks by purchasing 108 M1A2 Abrams from the United States. The US approved the sale of the tanks in June 2019. The Taiwanese M1A2, based on the M1A2 SEP V3 but with reduced armour specifications, was designated the M1A2T. As of December 2024, at least 40 M1A2Ts have been delivered to Taiwan and are currently in service.
Introduced in Update 2.53 "Line of Contact", the M1A2T is roughly analogous to the American M1A2 SEP in terms of performance. On the battlefield, it is a versatile tank that performs well in both active, aggressive gameplay and defensive engagements. The high quality thermal imager makes it easier to detect opponents at a distance and in poor weather conditions. However, much like the other Abrams variants, the tank's hull remains a vulnerable spot even to earlier APFSDS rounds, forcing players to hide it behind terrain features. In addition, the M1A2T does not have an option to install the "TUSK" reactive armour kit, which may compromise its survivability against more powerful ATGMs.
