The AH-64D Apache Longbow is the second production variant of the American AH-64 Apache attack helicopter. This version's main feature is its new AN/APG-78 Longbow millimeter-wave radar housed in a streamlined pod above the main rotor hub. The helicopter is also equipped with upgraded engines, new armaments, and new avionics. Serial production of the aircraft began in 1995. Instead of wheeled landing gear, the helicopter can be equipped with skis to improve stability and facilitate operation on unprepared, soft, or snow-covered surfaces.
After the U.S. Army adopted the helicopter, it attracted interest from several other countries, including Japan. In August 2001, Fuji Heavy Industries signed a contract for the licensed production of 50 AH-64D helicopters; the Japanese version was designated the AH-64DJP (the "JP" stands for "Japan"). However, due to the program's high cost, initial plans were not realized, and ultimately, only thirteen helicopters were built. The JGSDF operates these helicopters, including those of the 1st Combat Helicopter Squadron based at Metabaru Camp. In 2017, it was announced that the targeting systems of all the built helicopters would be modernized.
The AH-64DJP (AT) was introduced in Update 2.55 "Ninth Wave". The premium variant differs from the standard helicopter in the research tree by its lack of radar. Otherwise, it is the same Apache with decent speed and good armament, including advanced air-to-surface AGM-114K Hellfire II missiles with a long range, AIM-92 Stinger air-to-air missiles, and HMD.
