Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Powerful cannon.
  • Great post penetration damage.
  • Good reload time - a trained crew can easily get it under 20 seconds.
  • Front armour can bounce shots.
  • BR-471D shell is very effective against heavy targets.

Cons:

  • Armour cannot stop most common cannons.
  • Small crew compartment.
  • Gun depression is only -2°, which is very poor even for a Soviet vehicle.

History of creation and combat usage

Development

The SU-122P was a prototype vehicle based off the Soviet SU-100. The SU-100 assault gun, initially mounting the D-10S 100 mm gun, was reequipped to mount the larger 122 mm D-25S gun. The design was made at the KB Uralmash Plant to make use of the SU-100 hull when the D-10 gun production was not enough to arm every hull produced. The SU-122P was designed quickly due to the similarity in mounting between the D-10 and D-25 guns. The prototype design started in May 1944, and underwent factory trials at September. The trials proved successful and the design was sent to the army proving grounds with the same satisfactory results, making the SU-122P a viable weapon of use to the Soviet military.

Cancellation

Despite its satisfactory results, the SU-122P was not considered for mass production due to some reasons. The 122 mm D-25 gun, while providing a larger high-explosive round, does not have as much penetration as the 100 mm D-10. The vehicle could carry only 26 rounds of 122 ammunition, the rate of fire was only 3 or 4 rounds per minute, the recoil of the 122 mm gun was very high for the T-34 suspension, and the cramped interior for the crew was not solved.

These reasons on the vehicle design rejected the vehicle from consideration by the Soviet military. There was also the case of Zhozef Jakovlevich Kotin, the commissar of tank development, to which he had low opinion on mounting heavy weaponry on the T-34 chassis. Lastly, the 122 mm D-25 gun had priorities already on the IS-2 heavy tanks, thus even if the vehicle went into production, it would not have enough guns to be able to equip every chassis and hull manufactured.
