The M48A2 G A2 was a West German modification of the M48A2 C main battle tank aimed at improving its combat capabilities. The M48A2 C had been in service with West Germany since the early 1960s; however, by the late 1970s, West Germany realized that its 90mm gun was insufficient to counter most Soviet MBTs, leading to the decision to modernize the vehicles. This included replacing the M41 90 mm gun with the L7A3 105 mm gun, significantly increasing the tank’s firepower. The M48A2 G A2 was also fitted with a new engine to improve its reliability. Additionally, the tank's optics and fire control system were upgraded to increase firing accuracy and maximum effective range. Around 650 M48A2 Cs were upgraded to the M48A2 G A2 standard. These modifications were carried out at both state-owned German tank facilities and private enterprises. The M48A2 G A2 tanks were assigned to Territorial Army tank battalions where they served alongside the older M48A2 C tanks until the units disbanded in 1993.
The M48A2 G A2 was introduced in Update 1.81 "The Valkyries". In gameplay terms, the M48A2 G A2 functions as a fully capable main battle tank with all the necessary qualities: good armor, decent mobility, and high firepower. It also has access to the DM23 APFSDS round, which increases the likelihood of defeating enemy armored vehicles, particularly at long ranges or when firing at sloped armor. However, the M48A2 G A2 can be difficult to master because it lacks a gun stabilizer, which makes it more challenging to use effectively in close combat. Nevertheless, thanks to its powerful armament and decent armor, the M48A2 G A2 can effectively defend allied capture points or act as a long-range sniper.
