The Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service sought a replacement for their Oerlikon FF based Type 99 autocannons during the war. Like the Army Air Service, the Navy's first plan was simply scale up their 20mm cannon to a 30mm design called the Type 2. However, the design was still magazine-fed which limited its utility so they developed the newer Type 5. Unlike the earlier Oerlikon based Type 2, the Type 5 uses a more powerful 30x122mm cartridge instead of the 30x92RB and uses a combined gas and recoil action instead of the Oerlikon API action. The Type 5 was planned to be the standard armament of the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service and planned for use on the J7W1 interceptor. However, it arrived too late in the war for the planned use and only saw use on a handful of aircraft such as the 30mm fighter and the P1Y2-S torpedo bomber.

History

However, it arrived too late in the war for the planned use and only saw use on a handful of aircraft such as the J2M5 30mm fighter and the P1Y2-S torpedo bomber.

Media

Excellent additions to the article would be video guides, screenshots from the game, and photos.
