"zoom" is an extension maneuver. It aims at making separation / prevent energy lose by committing to a sustained attack maneuver. Zooming "up", "level" or "down" is irrelevant. Zooming is to keep your excess energy.

Splittingt Boom and Zoom and Boom and run is a mistake.

"boom" requires an attack phase. Being above, below or at equal altitude with the target is irrelevant. You only need excess energy, not necessarily in altitude, but also in speed.

"zoom" is an extension maneuver. It aims at making separation / prevent energy lose by committing to a sustained attack maneuver. Zooming "up", "level" or "down" is irrelevant. Zooming is to keep your excess energy. If you can reconvert it by climbing back up for another pass, that is great. If not, zooming away (level, or dive) is also a BnZ maneuver.
