Description

The OTOMATIC's turret. The SMA VPS-A05 is the tall radar at the rear.

The SMA VPS-A05 is an Itallian ground based target detection radar. In game it is found as the target detection radar on the OTOMATIC, alongside the SMA VPG-A06.

General info / usage

The SMA VPS-A05 is only a search radar, so cannot track targets by itself. However on the OTOMATIC (the only vehicle which currently uses it), the SMA VPS-A05 is fitted alongside the SMA VPG-A06, target tracking radar; this allows the OTOATIC to continue using the VPS-A05 radar to detect targets, while the VPG-A06 radar is tracking a target. The VPS-A05 provides full 360 degree search coverage out to a maximum range of 20 km.

Comparison with analogues

Compared to other search radars the SMA VPS-A05 has a good maximum range and an about average minimum range. The radar also scans quickly taking only 1 second to scan through 360 degrees. On top of this the radar also has a good minimum relative speed of only 36 km/h matching that of the Tunguska's 1RL144 radar, and the Gepard's radar.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Good maximum range
  • Good minimum relative speed
  • Scans quickly
  • Radar does not need to fold / unfold so can be turned on or off instantly

Cons:

  • Mediocre minimum range
  • Radar is quite tall and cannot be folded

History

The SMA VPS-A05 was developed in the 1980s by Galileo Avionica S.p.A. (now Selex ES). The radar was designed for use on the OTOMATIC anti-aircraft system. It is a pulse-Doppler radar, and was designed to operate at a low power output, decreasing the risk of it being locked onto by anti-radiation missiles.

Media

An excellent addition to the article would be a video guide, as well as screenshots from the game and photos.
