The ▄SB2C-5 Helldiver is a rank III French dive bomber with a battle rating of 3.7 (AB/RB) and 4.0 (SB). It was introduced in Update 1.73 "Vive la France".

General info

Flight performance

The SB2C-1c has surprisingly good manoeuvrability for a dive-bomber (especially at an airspeed of around 300 km/h), although its weight means that acceleration is not outstanding and climb rate is poor, especially when carrying ordinance. Top speed is also below-average. However, as a primarily air-to-ground attacker, these somewhat lacklustre flight characteristics do not overly hinder the vehicle's utility, unless you have a lot of ordinance

Armaments

Offensive armament

Main article: AN/M2 (20 mm)

The SB2C-5 (France) is armed with:

  • 2 x 20 mm AN/M2 cannons, wing-mounted (200 rpg = 400 total)

The two cannons are arranged with one in each wing. Each are armed with the same amount of ammunition, which means that all guns will fire with each other until empty.

Suspended armament

The SB2C-5 (France) can be outfitted with the following ordnance:

  • 2 x 250 lb AN-M57 bombs (500 lb total)
  • 1 x 569 mm Mk.13 torpedo
  • 1 x 569 mm Mk.13/44 torpedo
  • 2 x 500 lb AN-M64A1 bombs (1,000 lb total)
  • 4 x 500 lb AN-M64A1 bombs (2,000 lb total)
  • 1 x 1,000 lb AN-M65A1 bomb (1,000 lb total)
  • 1 x 1,000 lb AN-M65A1 bomb + 2 x 500 lb AN-M64A1 bombs (2,000 lb total)
  • 8 x HVAR rockets
  • 4 x 12.7 mm M2 Browning machine guns, wing-mounted (gunpods) (340 rpg = 1,360 total)

Defensive armament

Main article: Browning (7.62 mm)

The SB2C-5 (France) is defended by:

  • 2 x 7.62 mm Browning machine guns, dorsal turret (2,000 rpg = 4,000 total)

Usage in battles

Describe the tactics of playing in the aircraft, the features of using aircraft in a team and advice on tactics. Refrain from creating a "guide" - do not impose a single point of view, but instead, give the reader food for thought. Examine the most dangerous enemies and give recommendations on fighting them. If necessary, note the specifics of the game in different modes (AB, RB, SB).

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Multi-role capable aircraft both as a dive bomber and bomber hunter
  • Has air brakes to keep aircraft stabilized and from accelerating during a dive

Cons:

  • Poor manoeuvrability, especially when laden with suspended ordnance
  • Aircraft's vertical stabilizer (tail) causes a blind spot for the dorsal gunner

History

Describe the history of the creation and combat usage of the aircraft in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too long, take it to a separate article, taking a link to the article about the vehicle and adding a block "/History" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/(Vehicle-name)/History) and add a link to it here using the main template. Be sure to reference text and sources by using <ref></ref>, as well as adding them at the end of the article with <references />. This section may also include the vehicle's dev blog entry (if applicable) and the in-game encyclopedia description (under === In-game description ===, also if applicable).

Media

Excellent additions to the article would be video guides, screenshots from the game, and photos.
