Description

The 150 mm s.I.G.33 is a German infantry gun. It stands for "schweres Infanteriegeschütz 33" (literally: heavy infantry gun 33).

Vehicles equipped with this weapon

General info

The schweres 15-cm-Infanteriegeschütz 33 is capable of firing HE and HEAT grenades. Being an infantry gun developed in the 1920s, it is inaccurate at long range due to its short barrel.

Comparison with analogues

  • The 150 mm Stu.H 43 L/12 used by the Brummbär is of similar length, fires the same shells, but needs a longer time to reload.
  • The 150 mm Type 38 on the Ho-Ro fires a heavier shell with more explosive filler.
  • The 152 mm M-10T equipped on the KV-2 (Family) fires a heavier HE shell with less explosive filler and less penetration, but is able to fire SAPCBC shells.

Usage in battles

The sIG 33 has a huge damage output when using HE (and is therefore regularly encountered in high-rank matches), but its inaccuracy becomes increasingly difficult to compensate at firing distances beyond circa 500 m. The steep trajectory of its projectiles makes it suitable for indirect fire.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Fires a giant shell with lots of explosive filler
  • Damage and armour penetration stem entirely from the explosive force, meaning for most vehicles at its battle rating, just aim centre mass
  • Enough explosive filler that it can destroy unarmoured/light armoured targets with splash damage and overpressure alone

Cons:

  • Extremely slow reload rate, if you miss your initial shot in a confrontation, you are in danger of getting destroyed before being able to reload
  • Slow muzzle velocity and a heavy projectile means a lot of range adjustment and leading will have to be made
  • In close quarters, you may end up knocking yourself out due to overpressure damage
  • On heavily armoured opponents, the few ways possible to destroy them is to fire the shell either down underneath the tank or at the roof.

History

Examine the history of the creation and combat usage of the weapon in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too long, take it to a separate article, taking a link to the article about the weapon and adding a block "/History" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/(Weapon-name)/History) and add a link to it here using the main template. Be sure to reference text and sources by using <ref></ref>, as well as adding them at the end of the article with <references />.
