Description

The Etna-class, RN Etna, project is a rank III Italian light cruiser with a battle rating of 4.7 (AB/RB/SB). It was introduced in Update "Ixwa Strike".

The RN Etna is a unique ship, you cannot take an example from other ships. Its hull has many positive things but also several negative things. I start by saying Etna is a great ship at its battle rating, Its reinforcement is divided into 3 main thicknesses, starting with a 25mm front and followed by the side of the ship which is 60mm of armor and to finish we have the back of the ship with 35mm, all steel. It allows to block shots up to 152mm caliber with HE and SAP, APHE manage to pass but do not cause much damage, many fragments and debris are blocked by the remarkable protection against splinters of the ship (Hull 25mm steel).

And let's just say the hold is quite protected being located well below sea level. The ship is 146 meters long, 21 meters wide and 7.4 meters deep, the hull in general is very good, provide numbers for the protection  it is narrow enough to allow the ship to be agile despite the length is not obvious,  the draft is not very deep provide the number for the draft which further increases the maneuverability.

At the same rating we can find the Isuzu with 510 members, the Krasny Kavkaz with 878 sailors and the Bartolomeo Colleoni with 521. Obviously, the more crew members there are on the ship, the more difficult it will be to sink, because the more people are operational, the less time it will take to repair and extinguish the ship in case of an attack. The crew is mostly located in the center of the ship behind the anti-aircraft and auxiliary guns. The main turrets are not overly armored (20mm steel), they are quite uncovered, which is a disadvantage that is not obvious, also the rear turrets can only rotate up to 200 degrees which greatly limits the combat.

Let's see now how to sink this ship, a good shot under the front turret and the ship will explode in a big fire, you can also shoot right in the middle of the ship, right where most of the fuel is or if that's not enough aim under the two towers in the back of the ship and enjoy the explosion. To conclude we inform you that this ship has no torpedo armament.

Mobility

Speedforward / back
AB60 / 29 km/h
RB52 / 25 km/h

The maximum forward speed of the ship is 52km/h(32mph), while the maximum backward speed is -25km/h (15mph). The rudder is able to turn from one end to the other in 8 seconds, in case of danger the Etna is able to make a U-turn in 1 minute 32 seconds. You can see the very long hull that certainly does not help much to avoid enemy strikes and much less the torpedoes, Two Sulzer 12-ZAV-40S engines with a power of 11'600 Hp propel this 7000 ton ship at a maximum speed of 52km/h (32mph). The negative things instead are that being an old transport ship, it is quite large.

Armament

Primary armament

3 х Turret2 x 135 mm/45 O.T.O. Mod. 1937 cannon
Ammunition320 rounds
Vertical guidance-5° / 45°

These weapons were designed to give about the same range as the 12 cm/50 (4.7") guns but with a lower muzzle velocity and with less dispersion. In fact, partly due to the wider barrel spacing used on the mountings, these guns had only a quarter of the dispersion of the 12 cm guns.

Used on the battleships Andrea Doria and Dulio as a secondary weapon and on the "Capitani Romani" class light cruisers as the main weapon. It had been intended to mount these weapons in the "Comandanti Medaglie d'Oro" and Etna classes in a new AA mounting but these ships were not completed

.

Etna's 135mm has a 7.5 seconds reload and at its rating is not bad at all, compared to the 14 seconds of the Bartholomew and Krasny Kavkaz. Its bullets are not the best, but they are respectable: the He have 1.8Kg(39.6 lbs) of explosive mass and a total penetration of 23mm, the ApHe come with 1.4Kg(30.8 lbs) and explosive and manage to penetrate 174mm of armor and to finish has the He-TF with the same amount of explosive as the He. Talking about the ballistics, the Etna is found with quite slow shots compared to the above mentioned ships. The He, the ApHe and the He-TF reach a speed of 825m/s, which does not help much in long distance fights.

For this ship we recommend the use of the ApHe as they are much more effective than the common He, although using the ApHe for all targets is not really indicated, for example against destroyers or ships with little armor He are perfect. Due to the low speed of the bullets, we do not recommend fighting beyond 10km (6.2 miles) as you could not do much damage.

Secondary armament

10 х Turret65 mm/64 Ansaldo-Terni Mod.1939 cannon
Ammunition500 rounds

This medium-range AA gun was being developed by Ansaldo and Terni during World War II with some prototypes being completed, but it did not enter general service use. The loading equipment was electrically powered and included dual loading trays and a pantograph linkage rammer.

The Etna is equipped with 10 Ansaldo-Terni 65mm cannons that with their recharge of only 2 seconds do an important job for the ship, for example they keep away smaller ships that try to board you or they can be very effective against larger aircraft that do not yield with anti-aircraft defenses. The 65mm can be armed with 2 different types of projectiles, the He and the He-TF with both 450g (0.9 lbs) of explosive.

As previously mentioned the He's are very useful to annoy larger ships by creating fires or destroying modules, while the He-TF's are very intuitive to use, they are very effective against aircraft, especially larger ones.

Anti-aircraft armament

21 х Turret20 mm/70 Scotti-Isotta Fraschini mod.1939 autocannon
Ammunition1500 rounds
Belt capacity12 rounds
Fire rate230 shots/min

The Scotti-Isotta Fraschini 20/70 was an Italian cannon-gun. It was a multi-role weapon, which could be used as both an anti-aircraft and anti-tank function, available in both land and naval gun barrels.Development of the weapon began in 1928, by designer Alfredo Scotti,

The weapon employed the automatic recoil operation system, with fixed barrel and geometric block of the bolt removed by gas action.

The Etna has at its disposal as many as twenty-one 20mm anti-aircraft guns, of these twenty, six are positioned at the front of the ship. Just below the cockpit while the remaining fifteen are arranged evenly in the central part of the ship. These 20mm have 1500 rounds of ammunition and reload in 2.9 seconds. They are very effective against aircraft and can cause not inconsiderable damage to small ships. They have a maximum range of 3.5km (11482 ft) and a maximum effectiveness of 1.8km (5905 ft) against both air and surface targets.

Usage in battles

Now that we know every detail of the ship, let's see how to use it at its best. To begin we must understand that being a light cruiser can not be found to fight well against heavy cruisers and battleships, so the first step is to choose a target within our reach such as other light cruisers, destroyers and smaller ships.

It is recommend that you do not just show the front of the ship but angle slightly towards the enemy to have a better chance of bouncing back or absorbing the impending blow.

Unfortunately a big disadvantage of this ship is not being able to fully rotate the rear turrets, this means that if you want to use all the available arsenal you will have to show her boardside, which is not really suitable because it makes the Etna a much larger target.

Some of the biggest threats to the Etna are ships with automatic cannons such as the Russian Project 35, 41, 159, these pose one of the biggest threats to the Etna, she will be destroyed easily due to their rapid firing cannons which can unleash up to 150 rounds a minute!

In battle you will very often come across ships like the Fletcher, Sumner, Akizuki and Type 1936A classes, fortunately these ships have a weakness in common, they have the ammunition hold unprotected or weakly armoured, which means you just have to place a few high explosive shots exactly under their front turrets, detonate the ammo racks, storage and BOOM!

Blue water navy ships, patrol and light ships, will not do alot of damage to the Enta. If in a battle and a blue water ship is encountered shoot the hull just above the surface of the water and you will them explode! They will not be very happy with the damage you had caused, because they will be sinking.

As a tactic we recommend not to seek a direct confrontation with larger ships, such as battleships or heavy cruisers but instead support the team by doing support fire or anti-aircraft cover. The Etna’s 21 anti-aircraft guns will make quick work of any enemy planes which tries to sink you or attack your fleet.

If the Etna is encountered in battle, she has Several weak points of the Etna are the front and middle of the ship, in front is the hold so try to get hit as little as possible as well. While in the central part of the ship you have 70% of the total armament and crew of the ship, so if you can never show the side, it could prove fatal.

However Etna turrets only offer up to 6 mm armour protection, this is very weak and any machine gun knock out the sailours inside of these modules. This means a few HE rounds will destroy Etna primary weaponry, which would leave the Etna vulnerable to attack.

Pros and cons

Pros:

-Good reload time, 7.5 seconds - allowing it to hold its own against rival ships.

-It has very good crew survivability for a light cruiser, thanks to its internal anti-shrapnel armor and excessive hull size the bullets that manage to penetrate will disperse in a short time

-With its 21 anti-aircraft guns, it is the second ship with the most anti-aircraft at its rating. This is a great asset to the team as well because you'll be able to provide excellent anti-aircraft coverage.

-Its secondary armament is one of the most powerful at its rating. 10 65mm cannons that reload in 2 seconds can do more damage than you think.

-Although the ship is quite long and not too fast it is able to tack quickly and accurately.

Cons:

-Unfortunately, the engineers did not find room for torpedoes.

-It has a very long hull, this makes dodging  torpedoes harder if they have been fired at your boardside.

-The fact that it is so long and has a very deep draft will cause the ship to wobble excessively during the turn, so for a short period of time you will not be able to shoot.

- Limited firing arc for the rear turrets, cannot turn 360 degrees, despiste having no superstructure that blocks them. Requires the ship to do a boardside maneuver to get all guns on target.

-The poor armorued turrets  only 6 mm thick for the main turrets, extremely easy to knockout. They can be knocked out by light machine gun fire from enemy planes.

History

Describe the history of the creation and combat usage of the ship in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too long, take it to a separate article, taking a link to the article about the ship and adding a block "/History" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/(Ship-name)/History) and add a link to it here using the main template. Be sure to reference text and sources by using <ref></ref>, as well as adding them at the end of the article with <references />. This section may also include the ship's dev blog entry (if applicable) and the in-game encyclopedia description (under === In-game description ===, also if applicable).

Media

Excellent additions to the article would be video guides, screenshots from the game, and photos.
