General info

The Flakpanzer 38(t) in the Garage.

The Pz.Kpfw.38 fur 2 cm Flak 38 (or Flakpanzer 38(t)) is a Rank I German self-propelled anti-aircraft gun with a battle rating of 2.0. It was introduced in Update 1.47 "Big Guns". It is similar to its predecessor in terms of a 20 mm armament, but features and increased ammo stowage for extended firing time.

Tactics

It is best if you stick with your teammates because the enemy aircraft won't go for you, it will go after your team members. Don't try and think that every aircraft pilot is a beginner. Also, don't hide at the edge of the map, this will make your teammates an easy target for attackers and bombers. Use your speed as your advantage, you have an extraodinary acceleration, you can easily flank the enemy and end their life by killing all their crew or disabling all the modules. It would be best if you find a vantage point close to your allies and start scanning the skies for enemy bombers and attackers, occasionally watch your surroundings for enemy tanks as well, your HVAP rounds are able to pierce most of the tanks by the side and rear of the hull and turret. Try NOT to get distracted, you're also vulnerable to fighters with cannons and rockets since you only have two crew members. Most of the time, they will miss their shot and hit the ground right next to you, in that case, press W and run for your life! They can put an end to you in a few seconds. If the reverse happens there's nothing you can possibly do to save your tank from death. It is best to research the next AAA vehicle.

The Gepard fares surprisingly well at anti-tank warfare, compared to other nations' SPAA weapons. This is due to its' powerful gun, which, when "sniping", can defeat enemy tanks of the same Battle Rank in seconds. Other tanks sniping moving targets will often miss their first shot, reload, and make a hit on the next. The reload time will give the enemy time to run. However, with the Gepard's fast-firing autocannon, there is no need to reload immediately, and a missed shot can easily be re-aimed while firing. A common tactic to ensure a kill, is to constantly change the gun's aim slightly while firing on an enemy. The extra "spread" effect will help increase the chance of hitting multiple vital components and/or crew members. Also, once High Velocity Armour Piercing ammo is unlocked, the high muzzle velocity will aid penetration, accuracy, and range. This combination makes the Gepard a deadly and capable anti-tank weapon when used at long ranges. At short ranges, however, enemy tanks are likely to hit at their first shot, and the Gepard's weak armour will do little to stop a one-shot kill.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Very good quick-firing main gun.
  • Gun is actually very effective against most tanks as well, because of its insane rate of fire, and thin armour of its common opponents.
  • Good mobility & Top Speed, allowing you to get away from threats quickly.
  • Great high speed handling.
  • Turret has enough armour only to protect against machine guns, but AP shells over penetrate it and usually cause no damage.

Cons:

  • Crew of only 2 - if one dies without Crew Replenishment, vehicle is knocked out.
  • Armour is almost non existent, only the driver inside is relatively protected, at least against light machine gun fire.
  • Exposed gunner - vulnerable to all kinds of threat, be it tanks, airplanes or shrapnel from nearby explosions.
  • One hit by HE shell from just about anything will usually destroy the vehicle instantly.
  • Low speed handling is quite bad.
  • As with most other unarmoured AA vehicles, primary target of fighters.

Belt types
Belts Shell composition Combat usage
Default API-T, HEFI-T
(Armour Piercing Incendiary tracer – High Explosive Fragmentation Incendiary tracer) shell
50% of this belt are useless against tanks or planes. However against other SPAA this belt can reliably take out crew, armament, ammo and engine. Having one belt in reserve does not hurt.
Sprgr. HEFI-T
(High Explosive Fragmentation Incendiary tracer) shell
Versus planes and open combat compartment vehicles. Aircraft will usually take three to six hits. Heavy armoured attackers and bombers may require more though.
PzGr API-T
(Armour Piercing Incendiary tracer) shell
Intermediate usage until the better PzGr 40 can be used. Decent enough versus light tanks and other vehicles from the rear. Due the lack of HE filler underwhelming damage, yet still better than the PzGr 40.
PzGr 40 HVAP-T, API-T
(High Velocity Armour Piercing tracer - Armour Piercing Incendiary tracer) shell
Best penetrating shell of this vehicle. However, the damage effects are very poor. In close combat snipe for modules and crewmember for increased survival rate. Nothing is more annoying than emptying a clip and then to get killed in the reload because the enemy gunner survived. Against angled armoured it is not very effective like any other ACPR shell, this is offset by the very high base penetration though.

Modules and improvements

The modules you should research are Parts and Horizontal Drive for Tier 1, FPE and PzGr for Tier 2, and then the PzGr 40 HVAP round as soon as possible for better effectiveness against ground vehicles. The Engine should also be prioritized for better maneuverability in the field. Though Crew Reinforcements sound promising, it should only apply to Arcade Battle players. In Realistic and Simulator Battle, the module will do nothing to improve the vehicle since you need 2 crew members alive to activate it. Even in Arcade it should only be used sparingly since it is very likely that once you lost one crew member, you will quickly lose your last one by being shot again. Thus, it is recommended to de-equip the module if you unlocked it to save some Silver Lions.

History of creation and combat usage

Development

With the Panzer 38(t) production falling off line due to the obsolesce of the tank design, it was decided that its purpose will be adapted to different role with its chassis. Some were converted into tank destroyers such as the Marder IIIs and the Jagdpanzer 38(t)s, others were converted into anti-aircraft usage such as the Flakpanzer 38(t), or the Flakpanzer 38(t) auf Selbstfahrlafette 38(t) Ausf M.

The Flakpanzer 38(t) was built on the chassis of the Panzer 38(t) Ausf. M, with the engine located in the middle of the vehicle and the fighting compartment on the rear, with the driver still in the front. The vehicle was armed with a 20 mm Flak 38 cannon that can traverse a full 360 degree that could aim at low elevation when the superstructure is folded down. The first prototype vehicle was made in 1943, with production starting on November 1943 until February 1944 by BMM with 141 units made. These vehicles would enter service sometime in January 1944. The Flakpanzer 38(t)s were only meant to be an interim solution until an anti-aircraft vehicle based off the Panzer IV could be made, hence its short production life span.

Combat usage

The Flakpanzer 38(t) was meant to be issued in anti-aircraft platoons attached to each tank battalion in a Panzer divisions. The main user of these vehicles was the 12th SS Panzer Division stationed in Normandy. Most of the Flakpanzer 38(t)s were sent to the Western Front, though some did serve in the Eastern Front as well. However, at later stages of the war, the Flakpanzer 38(t)'s single 20 mm flak gun was deemed inadequate against enemy aircraft, which also made it vulnerable to air attacks. Despite that, the Flakpanzer 38(t) was still used as a ground support role due to its ability to traverse to low elevations, allowing the gun to engage enemy infantry or vehicles. Heavy losses led to the count of only nine Flakpanzer 38(t) left in December 1944.
