The best way to play this aircraft is to exploit its respectable low-altitude performance and good turn rate. The engine will starts to drop its power above 4000 meters. The Airacobra's playstyle rather  like average russian fighters (La-5, Yak series) than any other american planes.

The plane has good energy retention and effective vertical-combat capabilities. You can expolit this when you have to fight such planes you cant outturn, for example Spitfires, A6Ms and many other russian or japanese fighters. There will be some planes doing vertical manouvers better (J2M, BF109), but most likely you can easily beat these kind of enemies when it comes to horizontal dogfighting.

The dive speed is above average, so only use it to escape from lightly-built enemies (I-16, japanese fighters and even the Spitfire). Any other american plane can out-dive you.

The Airacobra's armament is very unique, both has much upsides and even more downsides. It has a hard-hitting 37mm cannon in the nose, but dont be fooled just because its caliber. This cannon will jam easily, so never spray or engage with long bursts. Also the M10 has very low ammo count, very short effective range, low velocity, and its horribily inaccurate.

If you want to use the cannon aganist air targets, your best choice from all belts would be the "Default". It may sound strange, but there is a good reason why you should use it: its full of HEFI-T* shells, which can tear apart any plane in just one hit.

The .50cal machine guns coming with  good ammo pool (but it can disappear quickly, so dont spray too much). They are getting mid-war belts, so its the best to equip the Universal rack as it contains a lot of M8 AP-I rounds. If you feel confident aiming the M2 Brownings, you should take the Stealth belt; it has the highest chance to set an enemy plane afire.

In summary, this plane is a solid jack off all trades, and cant be under-estimated by any enemy without punishment. The plane has the medicine to trade with almost enemy planes with its turn rate, its energy retention, its speed, its dive capabilities or its armament. Its only depending on the kind of the enemy which weapon will the Airacobra take to the fight to be victorious at the end.

Usage in battles

Describe the tactics of playing in the aircraft, the features of using aircraft in a team and advice on tactics. Refrain from creating a "guide" - do not impose a single point of view, but instead, give the reader food for thought. Examine the most dangerous enemies and give recommendations on fighting them. If necessary, note the specifics of the game in different modes (AB, RB, SB).

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Deadly armament, 37 mm cannon can tear apart any air target with just one or two hits
  • Backup machine guns are powerful and have a lot of ammunition
  • Very good climb rate; capable of bomber hunting
  • Turns fairly well
  • The pilot is relatively well protected
  • Premium rewards
  • Tricycle landing gear allows you to break continuously on the runway without danger of flipping over
  • Great dive characteristics and very high rip speed
  • Above average sea level speed

Cons:

  • Catch fire easily, as all Airacobras
  • The 37 mm cannon is inaccurate, has a very little ammo pool and fire rate, suffering from low velocity and slow-travelling shells
  • Turns worse than the P-39N-0, because of the additional weight and drag of the two extra .50 cals
  • Bad high-altitude performance

History

Describe the history of the creation and combat usage of the aircraft in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too long, take it to a separate article, taking a link to the article about the vehicle and adding a block "/History" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/(Vehicle-name)/History) and add a link to it here using the main template. Be sure to reference text and sources by using <ref></ref>, as well as adding them at the end of the article with <references />. This section may also include the vehicle's dev blog entry (if applicable) and the in-game encyclopedia description (under === In-game description ===, also if applicable).
