The 60 kg Navy Type 97 Number 6 is a Japanese general-purpose bomb. Japanese bombs are similar to Italian bombs in regards to construction as multiple components are either screwed, riveted or welded together as opposed to being a one-piece construction. The bomb is filled with 23 kg of TNT.

General info

The main body of the bomb is divided into 3 separate sections, the nose, the middle, and the tail section. The bomb is mostly painted in light grey

The nose is painted dark green, and on the very top of the nose is the nose fuse. Past the green is the start of a thin red band that around to the opposite side of the bomb.

On top of the middle section is where the suspension lug is, and 3/4 into the middle section, a thick blue band can be seen, which goes around the whole bomb. The middle section is the second largest section of the Type 97.

The tail section of the Type 97 is the largest section, comprising of four metal fins that are above or below the red band. The fins are joined together by a single dark green box assembly tail, finishing the bomb.

Usage in battles

The Navy Type 97 is best used for ground attacking lightly armoured targets such as armoured cars and mobile AAA. It is also advisable to use them against light tanks and howitzers/artillery guns, as well as static AAA. It can also easily destroy landing craft and gunboats.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Can be equipped by most Japanese aircraft to perform low-level ground attack
  • Lightweight and can multiple can be equipped at one time
  • Highly effective against mobile AAA and armoured cars

Cons:

  • Individually weak
  • Less effective against hardened targets and bases
