The Ki-43-I Hayabusa is a Rank II Japanese fighter with a battle rating of 1.7 (AB/RB) and 2.0 (SB). It was introduced in Update 1.43.

General play style

The Ki-43 was designed from the ground up to be a turn fighter. The aircraft well out maneuver a majority of enemies you may meet as well as having a better initial climb rate. The aircraft has very little in terms of armament or armor and this must be accounted for.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Lightweight and very maneuverable
  • Ability to switch from 2x 7.7, 2x 12.7, or one of each for weapon variety.
  • 12.7mm armament can take down most comparable monoplanes and biplanes.

Cons:

  • Limited armament, although it can upgrade to a pair of 12.7mm guns
  • Lack of armor and self-sealing tanks; it will be a burning heap by the time you're hit.

Modules and improvements

This aircraft has the capability of changing its primary armament from 7.7mm machine guns to 12.7mmm caliber. This could be a welcome module to unlock if players are finding the 7.7mm Type 89 difficult to use.

History of creation and combat usage

The first Ki-43 prototype was finished on December 12, 1938. The results were disappointing. The aircraft was designed to be a replacement to the aging Ki-27 otsu. Initial testing showed the aircraft to be heavier, less maneuverable, marginally faster, and problematic landing gear. When the IJAAF threatened to have the project cancelled the team from Nakajima went back to the drawing board. The designers lightened the airframe, new cockpit, and redesigned the tail. The most important change came with the addition of the new "butterfly flaps". This Fowler-type flap design allowed the aircraft to drastically improve its turning radius. Ten pre-production aircraft were built with these changes and the Army was impressed. During testing the issues created by lightening the aircraft did not show up. The wing structure was to weak for high-g combat maneuvers and the aircraft was prone to structural failures.

The Army approved production of the Ki-43 on January 9, 1941. Two weeks before Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor the first two Hayabusa units were created and deployed. They immediately went into action the morning of December 7th and saw immediate success. The first couple of weeks the Ki-43 destroyed enemy aircraft over Burma, Malaya, and Singapore. The allies gave this aircraft the code name "Oscar".

This aircraft featured a 980hp Ha-25 Type 99 14-cylinder radial engine with a single-speed supercharger. It was fitted with a fixed-pitch two-blade wooden propeller. Eventually the wooden propeller would be replaced with a variable pitch metal one. Initially the aircraft was fitted with 7.7mm machine guns but were replaced with 12.7mm Ho-103 machine guns when they became available. It is noted that some pilots favored having one of each mounted on their aircraft due to the low rate of fire from the 12.7mm. A total of 716 Ki-43-I were built.

Ingame description

The single-seater Japanese Nakajima Ki-43 Hayabusa (Peregrine Falcon) fighter was designed to replace the Ki-27 in the Japanese Imperial Army’s Air Force.


The Ki-27 design was so successful that, without resorting to the competition that usually occurred among aircraft manufacturers, the Air Force authorized Nakajima to create an improved model. The main requirement for the new fighter was a high top speed of at least 500 km/h but with the same maneuverability as the Ki-27.


The first three prototypes were prepared and tested in 1939, but their maneuverability was inadequate. Therefore 10 per-production aircraft with different configurations were considered. Two of them used the new “butterfly” combat flaps, which largely decided the issue. With the flaps, the plane became much more maneuverable.

All in all, 5919 Ki-43 fighters were produced, most of which were of the Ki-43-IIA design.
