Comparison with analogues

Usage in battles

Slightly lower velocity than its brethren Hispano cannons, it may throw off aim somewhat for the pilot. It has a good high explosive filler and a medium rate of fire allowing for strafing of land and water-based targets.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Large amount of explosive filler

Cons:

  • AP rounds have lower muzzle velocity than its predecessor Hispano cannons, which may throw you off in aiming
  • Medium rate of fire
  • High time to kill
  • Default belts include practice shell
  • All belts but stealth use standard tracer round which are ineffective
  • High spread

History

Developed by the British from the Hispano cannon series, it featured a higher rate of fire whilst being lighter and shorter. However, it had a lower muzzle velocity and required manual charging of ammunition in preparation to firing.

The Hispano Mk.V was the ultimate British license-built variant of the French Hispano 404 autocannon. The Mk.V featured a shorter barrel so the cannon could be housed in the wing, reducing drag and offering better protection for the cannon. One of the main fighters to use the Mk.V was the Hawker Tempest Mk V, but it also saw use during World War II on the Hawker Fury and Sea Fury fighters, late-war marks of the Spitfire, the prototype Martin-Baker M.B.5 fighter, and the Westland Welkin high altitude heavy fighter. In the post-war period, the Hispano Mk.V saw service on even more aircraft including the Westland Wyvern S4 navy strike fighter, the Avro Shackleton MR.Mk.2 maritime patrol craft, Bristol Brigand B 1 ground attack craft, Avro Lincoln B Mk II, the Supermarine Spiteful and its naval counterpart, the Seafang, the de Havilland Hornet twin-engine fighter, the de Havilland Vampire and Venom fighter jets, English Electric Canberra jet bomber, Sea Hawk naval fighter jet, Saunders-Roe SR.A/1 flying boat jet, Supermarine Attacker naval jet, and on South African Air Force variants of the Aérospatiale Alouette III helicopters.
