Description

The M.621 is an autocannon of French origin. It was developed in the 1960's by Giat (now Nexter Systems) as a vehicle and light aircraft armament. The main advantages are its limited weight and low recoil.

Comparison with analogues

Give a comparative description of cannons/machine guns that have firepower equal to this weapon.

Usage in battles

The GIAT M.621 performs well in an anti-plane role with a high rate of fire, being able to dismantle critical parts of aircraft fairly quickly. On the AH-60 the lead for the cannon can automatically be tracked when a target is locked, enhancing the lethality and effectiveness of the weapon.

In an anti-ground role, the M.621 performs worse when compared to other helicopter-mounted cannons from other nations. With a maximum penetration of 40 mm, only light vehicles such as BMPs can be destroyed while most medium tanks are invulnerable even from the roof. The M.621 also does not have access to APDS ammunition unlike other nations cannons.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • High rate of fire and relatively high accuracy
  • Effective against aircraft and light ground vehicles

Cons:

  • Maximum 40 mm of penetration, which is inadequate to combat most tanks

History

Examine the history of the creation and combat usage of the weapon in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too long, take it to a separate article, taking a link to the article about the weapon and adding a block "/History" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/(Weapon-name)/History) and add a link to it here using the main template. Be sure to reference text and sources by using <ref></ref>, as well as adding them at the end of the article with <references />.

Media

Excellent additions to the article would be video guides, screenshots from the game, and photos.
