History

After World War II, Hispano-Suiza to replace their venerable Hispano 404 autocannon. The resulting HS.820 was short-lived in the aircraft role due the introduction of revolver cannons, but it would see greater success as an anti-aircraft gun. One of the AA variants is the HS.639-B3 a single mounted cannon fed with only a 75 round drum which was sever limitation for a gun that fired at 1,000 rounds per minute. In 1970, the Hispano-Suiza arms division was bought out by Oerlikon who re-designated this cannon the GAI-C01.
