The Flakpanzer V Coelian is a Rank IV German self-propelled anti-aircraft gun with a battle rating of 6.7. It was introduced in Update 1.43.

The main purpose, usage and tactics recommendations

General play style

The Flakpanzer V Coelian is a anti-aircraft platform on the Panzer V chassis. Armed with twin 37 mm FlaK 44 cannons, it is well suited to giving aircraft a hard time. Due to being a modified Panther chassis, it is the fastest Flakpanzer in the German tree as well as being the most armored. With being faster and more armored, it is a more effective at quickly going to areas to set up and dispatch enemy air threats and taking more punishment from enemy fire. To use the machine effectively, stay away from heavy combat zones and use lesser known roads to get to the desired positions. Being armed with twin 37's, in most situations, it cannot pen any enemy armor at its rank. The only practical reason to fire on enemy armor would be to blind their field of vision and distract them for friendlies to dispatch them.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Superior armour than previous Flakpanzers
  • Excellent turret traverse to maintain fire on the enemy
  • Average reload rate of 0.3 seconds
  • Average ammo capacity of 1,200 rounds
  • Enclosed turret protects crew from strafing aircraft

Cons:

  • Almost 20k repair cost renders the Coelian useless for grinding and normal use in AB
  • Higher profile compared to previous Flakpanzers makes the Coelian a huge target for rockets (especially the RP-3s)
  • Low speed and acceleration due to downgraded Panther engine makes it very prone to bombs and unable to avoid ordnance
  • Based on a Panther G chassis, reverse speed is abysmal
  • Despite being the most armoured Flakpanzer, still possible of being knocked out instantly
  • Being armed with twin 37's, will most likely do no damage to enemy armor
  • Ammo-wise, not similar in capacity to the Flakpanzer IV Wirbelwind, Flakpanzer IV Ostwind and Flakpanzer IV Kugelblitz
  • Superior armour is overall useless against ordnance and with the larger profile and size. May be destroyed in the Coelian more than compared to the Ostwind

History of creation and combat usage

Development

Work began on the concept of self-propelled anti-aircraft guns after Germany lost its foothold on air superiority to the Allies. The anti-aircraft vehicles would protect forward tank units from low-flying attack aircraft by being able to advance alongside them. The first few products of the "Flakpanzers" were the Wirbelwind and Ostwind built upon the Panzer IV hull. However, more protection was needed for the gun crew and an output in self-propelled anti-aircraft guns must be met to support all of their tank forces. Thus, the decision was made to use the Panther hull also employed in German service.

The Panther tank was developed upon for work, the project was designated the Coelian. The development tested various of armaments on the tank chassis, ranging from the 20 mm MG 151, the 3.7 cm FlaK 43, and a 5.5 cm gun. Development on the turret with the 5.5 cm gun began in May 1944 alongside another that mounted a dual-mounted 3.7 cm FlaK 43 instaed.

Project end

Despite the project's ongoing status, it was soon cancelled due to the more urgent need for tanks and diversion of resources to Germany's defenses. This was due to the Allied invasion in Normandy and the ensuing bombing campaigns launched. which severely impacted Germany's infrastructure. Thus, the Coelian project was cancelled from lack of resources, with only one wooden prototype of the 5.5 cm turret was produced in February 1945 atop a Panther D hull.
