The FIAT 6614 (M40A1) is a rank IV Italian light tank with a battle rating of 6.7 (AB/RB/SB). It was introduced in Update 1.85 "Supersonic".

General info

Survivability and armour

This tank (if you can even call it that) has almost no armour like other vehicles in the Italian tree, and with that, very low survivability. Literally anything that hits a side shot will kill at least one crew member, while a frontal or rear shot will kill a minimum of 3 crew, taking you back to the hanger. In fact, I have played 272 battles with this vehicle and only twice has it survived more than one critical crew killing shot (I am counting these as ones that kill the driver/gunner and ignoring ones that kill the commander/loader).

The average effective thickness changes depending from where you are being shot from. At the front, it ranges from 15-20mm, although the front-facing window of the driver's hatch does only give 9mm of fresh Italian steel between an mg round and the driver. While a 7.62 mg will only penetrate at close range, a 12.7mm mg will only fail to penetrate that window at over a kilometre away. Considering the car's most valuable advantage is it's ability to get to good positions fast, a driver shot will ruin your match.

The side's obvious weak spots are the grills near the front that are only 5mm thick. Considering that the vehicle has a <=> shaped cross section if sliced from left to right, the upper plate of the slanted side offers 9mm of protection after the grill and 10-12mm around and in front of the grill. The lower side plate gives a whole new world of armour with a minimum thickness of 10mm everywhere, which means at least the mighty 7.62 mgs can't penetrate you there. The doors have the same thickness as the rest of the sides.

On the back, there's one slanted plate that is 8mm at the top which increases to 14 at the bottom. Again, like the sides, the door doesn't have a different thickness

Also, your gun is very easy to disable as it has a maximum effective thickness of 88mm, which all tanks at this BR will be able to penetrate and disable in one shot.

Mobility

The mobility is obviously very good. On a track like the ones on Sinai, you can easily reach 60 or 70 km/h., but on a grassy field, you only reach 45km/h, and driving on an actual road or going downhill will let you reach the 80's or 90's. In fact, I have often reached the max speed of 100 km/h on fulda. However, it is a wheeled car, so going through sand, snow or a small uphill will trickle away your speed. Also, since it's wheeled, it cannot deosn't have neutral steering, but it does have a small turning circle (diameter 3 tetrachs or 1.5 centurion mk 3's) and it can turn in this circle at 23 km/h

Anyway, to backpedal to reversing, it reaches -10 km/h after about 3 seconds and you will get to -20 by the fourth second

Armaments

Main armament

Give the reader information about the characteristics of the main gun. Assess its effectiveness in a battle based on the reloading speed, ballistics and the power of shells. Do not forget about the flexibility of the fire, that is how quickly the cannon can be aimed at the target, open fire on it and aim at another enemy. Add a link to the main article on the gun: {{main|Name of the weapon}}. Describe in general terms the ammunition available for the main gun. Give advice on how to use them and how to fill the ammunition storage.

Additional armament

Some tanks are armed with several guns in one or more turrets. Evaluate the additional weaponry and give advice on its use. Describe the ammunition available for additional weaponry. Give advice on how to use them and how to fill the ammunition storage. If there is no additional weaponry remove this subsection.

Machine guns

Offensive and anti-aircraft machine guns not only allow you to fight some aircraft but also are effective against lightly armoured vehicles. Evaluate machine guns and give recommendations on its use.

Usage in battles

Describe the tactics of playing in the vehicle, the features of using vehicles in the team and advice on tactics. Refrain from creating a "guide" - do not impose a single point of view but give the reader food for thought. Describe the most dangerous enemies and give recommendations on fighting them. If necessary, note the specifics of the game in different modes (AB, RB, SB).

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • 106 mm HESH is enough to one-shot most enemy vehicles, aside from some heavy tanks
  • 360-degree turret transverse
  • Fast on road
  • Small target, easy to hide
  • Can swim

Cons:

  • Very thin armour, 12.7 mm can penetrate it frontally
  • Bad off-road speed
  • Cupola blocks turret elevation when traversing the turret

History

Describe the history of the creation and combat usage of the ground vehicle in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too big, take it to a separate article, taking a link to an article about the vehicle and adding a block "/ History" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/(Vehicle-name)/History) and add a link to it here using the main template. Be sure to reference text and sources by using <ref>, as well as adding them at the end of the article.

Media

An excellent addition to the article will be video guides, as well as screenshots from the game and photos.
