The Akan m/39 is a Swedish license-built FN Browning M.1939 13.2 mm heavy aircraft machine gun. It has a fire rate of around 1,000 rpm.

History

The FN Browning M.1939 was conceived as an attempt to make a machine gun with the punch of a 20 mm cannon. It was an improved version of the M2 Browning made by Fabrique Nationale being lighter despite firing the more powerful 13.2 mm Hotchkiss instead of .50 BMG. Designed for use with explosive rounds, it was for all intents and purposes a cannon instead of a machine gun. The 13.2 mm FN M.1939 Browning attracted interest from Romania, Sweden, the Netherlands, Finland, and Belgian Military Aviation itself. However, the guns were only exported to Romania and Sweden before the German occupation in May 1940 ended production.

In Sweden the original FN-built Brownings were designated the 13,2mm automatkanon m/39 or Akan m/39. However, Sweden also wanted a license on the design so documentation was delivered along with the guns and munitions, first by train, but when the Germans invaded, they rushed on a ship for security. The delivery was successful, but the documentation was incomplete which along with differences in construction quality resulted in Sweden having to make a variant designated the Akan m/39A which became the nation's main aircraft machine gun during World War II.
