History

In 1922, the Washington Naval Treaty was signed that limited the armament of heavy cruisers and aircraft carriers to 8-inch guns. The Imperial Japanese Navy soon went to work making an 8-inch guns to arm these warships. With an actual bore of 7.9 inches, the 20 cm 3rd Year Type No. 1 was first used on the Furutaka-class such as IJN Kako and the namesake IJN Furutaka. It would also be used on the Aoba-class and the Myoko-class cruisers along with the aircraft carriers Akagi and Kaga which used them in casemates. The carriers would be the only ships to keep these guns going into World War II as the other ships had their guns replaced by the more powerful 20 cm/50 3rd year type No.2 firing an 8-inch shell. The original variant is distinct because it had a case diameter step. Along with the IJN, the Royal Thai Navy used these guns on their Thonburi-class coastal defense ships which were built by Kawasaki.
