History

The first guns built for heavy cruisers of the Imperial Japanese Navy were the 20 cm 3rd year type No.1, which was only 7.9 inches in diameter. However, the Washington and London Naval Treaties allowed heavy cruisers to have a maximum of 8-inch guns and the IJN wanted to use the maximum allowed caliber for the best possible performance. The 20 cm 3rd Year Type No. 2 was built between 1930 and 1931 to serve as their needed 8-inch guns and was first used to refit their existing heavy cruisers of the Aoba-class, Furutaka-class, and Myoko-class.

When the Mogami-class was first built in 1931, it was a light cruiser with 155 mm/60 3rd Year Type guns to conform with the Washington Naval Treaty restricting light cruisers to 6.1-inch guns. However, Japan was never happy with the total tonnage allotted to their capital ships and the other restrictions by the 1922 treaty and ordered the 20 centimeter/50-calibers 3rd Year Type No.2 guns to eventually re-arm the Mogami-class cruisers while officially they were intended as spares for their 8-inch gun armed cruisers built under the treaty. When the start of the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1937 was met with condemnation by the League of Nations, Japan ultimately withdrew their membership and with no treaties to hold them back, began refitting their Mogami-class ships with their 20 cm/50 3rd Year Type. This process occurred between 1939 and 1940 leaving them ready for combat during the Pacific Theater of World War II.

The first ships to be laid down with these guns were the Takao-class which were first planned as Mogami-class ships, but they were built after Japan abandoned the treaty and later the Tone-class heavy cruisers, which were similarly planned with 155 mm/60 3rd Year Type 6.1-inch guns, were laid down with the 8-inch guns. The guns had notable problems with dispersion early in their service life, but a stiffening of their hulls and delaying the firing of individual shells was found to alleviate the problem somewhat. Japan never used triple mounts before the 7.9-inch guns and had problems with the rounds knocking each other off course. They were also intended as dual-purpose guns but lacked the proper training and elevation gears to serve in an anti-aircraft role.
