Description

The GIAT CN120-25 G1 is a 120 mm smoothbore gun and it could fire variety of NATO 120 mm ammunition, including the French OCC 120 G1 HEAT but also the OFL 120 G1 APFSDS, which are all suitable for every NATO 120 mm smooth bore gun. The OFL 120 G1 is capable of penetrating up to 420 mm of RHA steel armor at a range of 1,000 m.

General info

The CN120-25 G1 is a cannon that was used in the AMX-32 and the AMX-40 prototype tanks. It is very similar to the GIAT CN120-26 F1 in terms of looks and performance.

Usage in battles

Hit and Run

The CN120-25 G1 cannon is best suited for "Hit and Run" attacks, as the tanks it is mounted on have adequate mobility to make these attacks possible and effective. The user should try to flank the enemy as the rounds the CN120-25 G1 fires, will have a hard time penetrating the frontal plates of enemy USSR tanks. Side shots and rear shots are the best way to engage and enemy with this cannon as most of the time, going head-on and engaging the frontal armour of enemy tanks will be a suicide mission.

Sniping

The CN120-25 G1 can also be used to snipe enemies from afar. It isn't the best idea to do so, and the more effective way to snipe would be to combine a flanking playstyle with the sniping playstyle. As mentioned above, the rounds that the CN120-25 G1 fires aren't effective against frontal armour of enemy tanks, like for example the T-72BT-72B3T-80B and T-80U tanks, so the user should focus on side or rear shots. Finding a position behind enemy lines or on the sides with adequate cover, will make the CN120-25 G1 shine.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Gun is stabilized; one of the few modern tanks that have a stabilizer in the French tree
  • High velocity for its APFSDS shell

Cons:

  • Not enough penetration power to pierce trough most frontal armour plates; side shots are essential
  • Creates bellow-average amounts of spalling; multiple shots will be required

History

As the AMX-32 had failed to attract any potential sales, GIAT decided to produce yet another upgrade, the AMX-40 Main Battle Tank. The development of the AMX-40 began in 1980 as a clean sheet design. In 1983, the first prototype was finished and presented at the Satory Exhibition that year. Two further prototypes were produced in 1984; the fourth and last one was fabricated in 1985. It ceased being offered for export in 1990 and with it, the CN120-25 G1 as well as it was only mounted on the AMX-32 and the AMX-40 prototypes.
