Radars as a mechanic were added into War Thunder in Update 1.87 "Locked On".

Prior to Update 1.87, radars were depicted by a more simple mechanic exclusively for ground SPAA units. It allowed SPAA units that historically used radar to track targets to have a simple targeting reticle appear in Realistic and Simulator battles. However, with Update 1.87, this feature was added to both aircraft and ground vehicles that used radar to search, detect, and lock-on.

Uses (Aircraft)

Radar in the game right now does not have many uses but in some cases is required. Search radar. Search radar is a very basic and some of the first radars developed. You might find that lower tier aircraft have these since this was the time around World War 2. It's function is simple. Shoot a radar beam and if something is found (Preferably another aircraft (Hostile)), the beam bounces back to the aircraft's radar then to be displayed on the user interface. The process of shooting a radar beam is often extremely fast to get the best results. Tracking radar was often equipped on night time bombers during World War 2 as it was hard to see. Tracking radar. Tracking radar is one of the more useful radars in the game. If you want to get your hands on this early you can get the F6F-5N on the USA country. This is a modified model of the aircraft, F6F-5. Tracking radar is used to launch some missiles, show direction of the aircraft, speed (m/s), distance and in Arcade Battles it shows you where to shoot. Default key-binds to activate the tracking radar is Alt+F. Not all aircraft have this tracking function.
