General info

The 20 mm Mk 11 mod 5 cannon can fire up too 4,000 rounds per minute, with a muzzle velocity of 1,012 m/s. Its one-second burst mass is 7.33 kg. The AP shells can penetrate up to 33 mm of armour. The HE shell carries 14 g of explosive, a few hits should be able to destroy a wing or heavily damage any other part of the plane. Maximum effective range of this cannon is up to 2,000 m.

Comparison with analogues

When compared to the M61 Vulcan gunpods, the 20 mm Mk 11 mod 5 gunpod adds less weight and drag to the aircraft. However the Mk 11 Mod 5 gunpod has less ammo, a slower fire rate, and a worse precision than the M61 Vulcan gunpods.

Usage in battles

The 20 mm Mk 11 mod 5 is a great weapon for multi-tasking in air battles. You can use it either against ground targets (artillery or AA positions) or against aircraft. However, due to its poor armor penetration, it should not be used in mixed battles as a CAS weapon.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Very high rate of fire (4,000 rpm)
  • Very good damage against aerial targets

Cons:

  • Low armour penetration; unsuitable for attacking tanks in mixed battles
  • With a high rate of fire, 750 ammo is used rather quickly
  • Precision is mediocre at best

History

Examine the history of the creation and combat usage of the weapon in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too long, take it to a separate article, taking a link to the article about the weapon and adding a block "/History" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/(Weapon-name)/History) and add a link to it here using the main template. Be sure to reference text and sources by using <ref></ref>, as well as adding them at the end of the article with <references />.

Media

Excellent additions to the article would be video guides, screenshots from the game, and photos.
