− | + | MiG-21 SPS (also MiG-21 PFS) was a subvariant of MiG-21 PF. The letter S means "сдув пограничного слоя" ("sduv pogranichnogo sloya", SPS) which means blown flaps. Blown flaps, or jet flaps, are powered aerodynamic high-lift devices used on the wings of certain aircraft to improve their low-speed flight characteristics. They use air blown through nozzles to shape the airflow over the rear edge of the wing, directing the flow downward to increase the lift coefficient. There are a variety of methods to achieve this airflow, most of which use jet exhaust or high-pressure air bled off of a jet engine's compressor and then redirected to follow the line of trailing-edge flaps. For this, the engine was modified and received a new name R-11F2S-300, this engine redirected some air from the compressor to the flaps. The military wanted it to be able to take off from unpaved airfields, and these modifications shortened the takeoff run to 480m on average and reduced the landing speed to 240 kph. Two СПРД-99 (SPRD-99) boosters could be installed to shorten the takeoff run even more. It was mass-produced from 1961 to 1965. | |

Usage in battles
Describe the tactics of playing in the aircraft, the features of using aircraft in a team and advice on tactics. Refrain from creating a "guide" - do not impose a single point of view, but instead, give the reader food for thought. Examine the most dangerous enemies and give recommendations on fighting them. If necessary, note the specifics of the game in different modes (AB, RB, SB).

History
MiG-21 SPS (also MiG-21 PFS) was a subvariant of MiG-21 PF.
