Image of the front view of a U.S. Mk.13/44 torpedo with the wooden drag ring or otherwise known as the "pickle barrel" mounted over the nose. The drag ring increased the aerial drag of the torpedo, slowing it down during descent and was obliterated upon impact with the water, absorbing a good amount of energy from the impact, protecting the warhead of the torpedo.
