Comparison of the 36 cm/45 Type 41 (356 mm) SAP and HE shells hitting the unarmored (top) and armored (bottom) parts of the Chapayev light cruiser.

Note that for the unarmored sections of the ship the HE shell did far more damage, even if SAP hit the smoke funnel it still failed to fuze inside of the ship. On the other hand HE shell was largely deflected by the 130 mm armor around the ammo elevator, while the SAP shell fuzed and dealt far more damage thanks to its larger bursting charge.
