General info

Yak-3 (VK-107) in the Garage.

The Yak-3 (VK-107) is a premium Rank IV Soviet fighter with a battle rating of 6.0 (AB), 5.7 (RB) and 6.3 (SB). It was introduced in Update 1.51 "Cold Steel".

The main purpose, usage and tactics recommendations

General play style

The Yakovlev Yak-3 VK107 is a low altitude fighter that climbs and turns extremely well, but the turn fight abilities are worse than its predecessor, the Yak-3. It is also faster: it can go up to 700km/h while the Yak-3 rips it's wings at 650 km/h.

Vehicle characteristics

Tactics

In battle, as soon as you take off, climb at 20/25 degrees, alternating WEP and 100% throttle. Be aggressive, and engage as soon as you can. Avoid engaging bombers, as this aircraft is very fragile and has subpar armament, risking your own death without getting the kill – if you must, by all means avoid tailing bombers. Your superior climb rate means you should be able to first gain an energy advantage and engage the enemy from the front. Avoid front passes, as your 20mm cannons are no match versus 6x .50 cals, 4x20mm or even 4x30mm cannons, all of these configurations this Yak-3 is regularly matched up against. However, you can easily go back on target and attack from the side after escaping from a head-on. This fighter can out-turn most of its competition easily, though one should not rely on sustained turning as a strategy. The superior acceleration granted by its engine means its pilots shouldn't linger too long in a single engagement and should rather take breaks to climb again after having forced the opponent to bleed speed and altitude, largely due to the factor of G-force overload that are inherent to any turning engagement in a battle rating 5.7 fight. Depending on the opposition, simply going in the horizontal, especially at lower altitudes, can be a great way of gaining separation and breathing space for planning the next move, since the engine's raw power also makes it one of the fastest aircraft in a straight line in low altitude. This of course should not be attempted when versing high-altitude fighters in their preferred medium, as performance drops off significantly after 4500 m of altitude. This does not mean one should not climb beyond that, but it's best to force engagements to drop down to lower altitudes whenever possible.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Great Acceleration
  • Good speed in level flight
  • Good top speed
  • Good climb rate
  • Good horizontal energy retention
  • Decent roll rate

Cons:

  • Relatively poor durability
  • Low ammo count
  • Terrible dive capability
  • Poor high-altitude performance (>6000m)
  • Low lockup speed
  • Engine overheats extremely quickly
  • Poor armament: cannot engage head on, often struggles to take down enemy fighters.
  • Low ammo and center-line weapons make it very difficult to hit opponents flying away from you.
