General info

The T-126 in the garage.

The T-126(SP) is a premium Rank I Soviet light tank with a battle rating of 2.7. It was introduced in Update 1.47 "Big Guns". It costs 550 Golden Eagles. A premium version of the T-50, being its prototype design, it shares it similarities, but actually is better due to much thicker armour all around. An unfortunate side effect results in a decrease in top overall speed due to weight of added armor.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Good offroad mobility thanks to wide and massive tracks
  • Steady and easy to control, unlike the T-50
  • Bulky tracks are durable and resistant to damage from both fire and improper driving
  • Relatively thick sloped frontal armour can deflect most of the lower rank enemy fire
  • Sloped armour on all sides can help when angled properly
  • Ability to use APCR shells and boost the penetration abilities of otherwise obsolete gun
  • Accurate and fast reloading stinging gun
  • Small size and height makes the tank smaller target

Cons:

  • Below average maximum speed of only 35 km/h due to high mass and insufficient engine power
  • Gun might seem obsolete and unable of dealing serious damage
  • Very cramped interior - crew and equipment are very often knocked out by one well placed shot
  • Weak turret armour compared to the hull - turret is an easy target
  • Turret slope angle is rather low and does not effectively deflect enemy fire
  • Very weak mantlet with poor sloping can be easily penetrated even by lower rank tanks
  • Armour despite being sloped can be easily penetrated by modern tanks like Sherman or Panzer IV

Modules and improvements

History of creation and combat usage

Development

The Spanish Civil War gave the Soviets insight on the future of tank warfare, and the knowledge led to an attempt to upgrade or replace their tank forces that consisted mainly of the T-26 light tanks. The development started in 1939 to create a replacement with for the T-26 and BT light tanks.

The project for the new tank began as the SP project, which is short for Soprovzhdeniya Pekhoty, which means "Infantry Support". The project was headed by the OKMO tank design bureau at the S.M. Kirov Factory No. 185 in Leningrad under the individuals L. Troyanov and I. Bushnevov. Two prototypes, the T-126 and the T-127 was built, and the T-126 was to be further developed into the finished design. The finished design would become the T-50 light tank, which was an intricate light tank for the Soviets at the time. The tank featured sloping armour, torsion bar suspension, diesel engine, three-man turret, and a commander's cupola, all of which were advanced features at the time.

Production

The tank would eventually be produced in 1941 during the German invasion in Operation Barbarossa. Only 69 T-50s were made before production ended in January 1942, the design suffered from being expensive, unreliable, and over-engineered. Today, two T-50 survive in intact condition, one normal variant in the Kubinka Tank Museum, and an up-armoured variant in Finland at a museum in Parola.
