General info

Sturmpanzer II in the Garage.

The Sturmpanzer II is a Rank I German tank destroyer with a battle rating of 2.0. It was introduced in Update 1.67 "Assault".

The main purpose, usage and tactics recommendations

General play style

The Sturmpanzer II's low velocity 150 mm howitzer allows the ability to lob shots over low lying hills and terrain. Due to the low muzzle velocity, shooting at moving targets is not advised.

If teammates are present and cooperative, the Sturmpanzer II can even be used as an artillery piece (within reasonable ranges [~1200 meters])

Cover is friendly to this vehicle due to its low profile. It is important to maintain a good combat range with the Sturmpanzer II, getting very close range to the enemy is not advisable however effective if you are holding an unexpected, well-covered corner, as well as engaging at a long range.

Despite the presence of a high-penetrating HEAT ammo, HE is recommended for use against most, if not all targets, as it can cause high levels of spalling to occur with all but the most heavily armoured of tanks. Another target for the HE is the ground underneath the target as it may blast shrapnel through the target's floor armour.

The HE round can also kill most tanks as long as it is aimed at the centre of mass, Do not spend time aiming at certain parts of the tank. When an opportunity presents itself, fire at will, as delaying usually result in the enemy taking the gunner out. In arcade mode, don't try to aim and fire just because the enemy's name tag is bright red. Clutching shots is satisfying but it's very dangerous as it usually means the enemy can kill your gunner as well. Always use your binoculars first to see whether the enemy turret is aimed at your general direction

Vehicle characteristics

Tactics

Equip the HE shell and a few spare HEAT shells, However at the BR range, it is best to use HE shells over the HEAT shells for maximum damage, this is despite the HE shell's inferior penetration to the HEAT, so why?

As HE shells is purely explosive, the round does not penetrate the armour then explode like APCBC and APCR rounds, It instead explodes immediately upon impact (unless its hitting less than 5 mm of armour) and releases sharpnel with 60 mm of penetration in a wide cone, That means that the sharpnel which was propelled in the direction towards the armour will still penetrate if the thickness of the armour is less than 60mm. That means that sometimes the shell can penetrate the side armour with a ridiculous angling but cannot penetrate the front armour due to the differences in the thickness of armour

Specific enemies worth noting

Counter-tactics

Aim for the driver or the ammo rack on the rear roof, many times a Sturmpanzer survives due to the driver and the ammo rack being intact. As there are 3 crew members on the turret, it's easy to miss one of them and result in the Sturmpanzer firing back. if you are taking absurdly long to kill it, Shoot the driver and be in a position where it cannot suddenly turn against you. Never keep spamming on its turret and expect it to die quickly, utilize the damage report on your shots.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Devastating 150 mm howitzer with HE and HEAT, easily killing any low to high-rank tanks.
  • Features a Heat shell with 185 mm penetration, which is exotic in its rank.
  • Low-velocity shell gives a parabolic path that can be shot over small hills.
  • Decent frontal armour due to Panzer II chassis, blocking most machine gun fire.
  • Low profile vehicle makes it easier to hide.
  • Commonly underestimated.
  • Due to a low muzzle velocity, the rounds hits at a high angle, making it even more effective against sloped armour which is very common.

Cons:

  • Open-top turret exposes crew to artillery and aircraft strafing fire.
  • 15 mm armour everywhere else.
  • An enemy can shoot the driver, which will restrict gun traverse to only 8° due to inability to move hull.
  • Crews are sitting with their heads above the side armour, machine gun fire can incapacitate all of the ones in the fighting compartment.
  • Gun recoil can push vehicle back and creates large dust cloud that could reveal position.
  • Ammo rack on rear roof on a conspicuous box becomes priority target for enemies using HE shells.
  • Belly armour is only 5 mm, a simple HE shell to the ground could destroy the vehicle.
  • Long reload of more than 14 seconds.
  • Very low muzzle velocity.
  • Awful gun depression.
  • Easily disabled/destroyed by artillery strikes

Modules and improvements

History of creation and combat usage

The proper name for this SPG is the 15 cm sIG 33 auf Fahrgestell Panzerkampfwagen II (Sf) Sd.Kfz.121/122. The prototype was built from surplus Panzer II hulls, starting in October 1940. The prototype was considered uncomfortably tight, and an attempt with an expanded version was made with a lengthened chassis with an additional road wheel. 12 were built, but the type wasn't popular because it was vulnerable to counter-battery fire and the chassis was overloaded with the modifications.
