Western Front

The Western European Theatre of World War II covers the events of 1939-45 that took place in Western Europe and the Atlantic. The conflict is considered to have started on September 3, 1939 when France and Great Britain declared war on Germany as a response to the German invasion of Poland. However, no active operations took place until May 1940, when the Norwegian Campaign started. The fighting ended on May 10, 1945, three days after the German Instrument of Surrender had been signed.
The main countries that participated in the conflict in this area were Germany, Italy, Great Britain, France, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Poland, the USA, and Canada.
The missions of this section cover the military operations in the Ardennes, near the coasts of Britain and Norway, over the Ruhr, and over Berlin.

Battle of Britain

By June of 1940, Germany had succeeded in occupying Denmark and Norway and forcing France to surrender. Great Britain had lost all of its close allies, and the German High Command believed that Britain was broken and ready to sue for peace.

In the Danish and Norwegian operations, Germany had lost a significant portion of its fleet, and this prevented it from quickly attacking Britain by sea. Instead, the Luftwaffe was tasked with establishing air superiority before Operation Sea Lion began.

And so, the Battle for Britain began on July 10, 1940. It was to be the largest aerial battle in the Second World War.

The forces of the Luftwaffe began to attack ports and naval convoys which, in the opinion of the German High Command, could interfere with the planned landing. However, without gaining control of the skies over Britain, no hope could be had for an invasion by sea, and in August, German bombers began to concentrate on airfields.

However, the Royal Air Force successfully resisted the Luftwaffe, and the intense bombing raids came began to slow down by the beginning of November. In May of 1941, they stopped almost completely. The German battle plans were thwarted and no land-based Battle of Britain would ever occur.

Ruhr

The Ruhr industrial center had been a target for the Royal Air Force from the start of the war. In 1943, a 5-month strategic bombing of the region managed to severely damage German industry; the production of steel and ammunition decreased considerably.

In 1945, after defeating German forces in Ardennes, the Allies launched a counteroffensive on German territory, taking strategically important and industrial regions. Thus, on April 18, 1945, after the encirclement of German troops by American and British forces, the Allies took over the Ruhr region. Army Group B, the last German force to offer real opposition to the Allies in their march towards Berlin, was completely defeated. The German command lost the largest industrial region that provided the country with war-sustaining power.

Sicilian Operation

The Allied landing on Sicily began the Italian Campaign.
Because of an Allied deception which convinced German High Command that the Allies were landing in Greece, most German forces had withdrawn from Sicily, but a large contingent of German and Italian forces still remain on the island.
The operation began on July 9, 1943. Canadian, American, and British forces landed at various points on the island and, without support from the inside, advanced deep into the island within a few days. The American army quickly took Palermo, the capital of Sicily.
The Italian-German army had to retreat to Messina to organize an evacuation onto the Italian mainland. The evacuation was successful, and the city of Messina was already emptied by the time the Americans reached it.
By the end of the operation on August 17, Allied forces had gained complete control over Sicily as well as the air over it and seas around it. The Sicilian occupation was a near perfect springboard for an attack on the Italian mainland.

Battle of the Bulge

The Ardennes have played a large role in all of the wars in the region. Towards the beginning of World War II, Germany passed through them to attack France, and in less than a month had captured half of the country.

At the end of 1944, when Allied forces were liberating western Europe from German occupation, the German High Command decided to once again use this region for an assault.

On December 16, 1944, the German offensive launched, and by December 25 they had advanced 90 kilometers into the region, using the poor weather to their advantage and trying to take the bridges over the Meuse River. However, the weather had improved by the end of December, which allowed the Allies to call in air support. The spearhead of the attack, the 2nd Panzer Division, was surrounded, and the 5th Tank Army was under threat of suffering a similar fate. The German army began to retreat.

Except for isolated conflicts and counterattacks, by January 29 Allied forces had completely defeated the Ardennes Offensive. The Wehrmacht lost the strategic initiative once and for all.

After the April 1945 defeat of army group "B"," the last portion of the German arm which was encamped at the Ruhr, Anglo-American forces reached the capital of the Third Reich. Soviet forces were a mere 60 kilometers away.

But the surrounded Berlin would not give up without a fight, and the Battle of Berlin, the largest battle in the world's history, started on April 16. 3.5 million men fought in the battle. The operation continued for 23 days and ended with the storming of Berlin, when Soviet troops took the capital and capture the German leadership, ending the Second World War in Europe.

On May 7, the last resisting German groups were silenced, and an act of unconditional surrender was signed by the German military leadership. It took effect on May 8 (May 9 by Moscow time), a day now remembered as Victory Day.

Norwegian Campaign

Norway remained neutral on the eve of World War II, but for the German command it was the key both to the Swedish mines and the North Sea. For this reason, and because fears that Britain could base their own military operations in Norway Germany began to plan Operation Weserübung, a simultaneous attack on Norway and Denmark.
Britain also planned to move into Norway to help Finland defend itself from the Soviet Union. In addition, the British hoped to lay mines in the neutral waters between Norway and the coastal islands to interfere with the delivery of ore from Sweden to Germany.
The German invasion began on April 9, 1940, when the first landing party entered the harbor of Narvik, where two naval battles took place. Bergen, Stavanger, Trondheim, Kristiansund, and other cities on the coast were attacked and occupied during the same day. Many cities suffered devastating bombing strikes.
The Norwegians suffered from a lack of anti-tank and anti-aircraft weapons and so could not effectively resist the advancing German forces. On April 14, British and French troops, supported by British aircraft, landed in the region and not only repelled the Luftwaffe but were able to liberate Narvik on April 28.
The plight of affairs in France, however, forced the Allies to evacuate. Certain parts of northern Norway resisted until June 10. By June 16, the country was completely occupied by Germany.
Although the German operation was successful, the Kriegsmarine suffered heavy losses, preventing the success of later attempts at invading Great Britain.

Pacific Ocean Theater

The Pacific Ocean Theatre of World War II covers the events of 1941-45 that took place in the Pacific Ocean, on its islands, and in Southeast Asia. The official date of the beginning of military operations in this area is considered to be December 7, 1941, when the Empire of japan attack the American bases at Pearl Harbor, Guam, and Wake Island. The war in the Pacific Ocean ended on September 2, 1945, when Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu and Yoshijiro Umezu, Chief of the Army General Staff, signed an Instrument of Surrender on the deck of the American battleship USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay.
The main countries that participated in the conflict were the USA, the Empire of Japan, Great Britain, Australia, the Netherlands, the Philippines, New Zealand, and Canada; the USSR, Mexico, France, and many other countries were also participants.
The missions of this section cover the military operations of the main participant countries at Pearl Harbor, in the Philippine Sea, in Port Moresby, and at Peleliu, Iwo Jima, Guam, and Saipan.

Attack on Pearl Harbor

The Great War ended in 1918. Germany and its allies were defeated. A new balance of power began to form almost as soon as the Treaty of Versailles was signed. New forms of friendship would only take 20 years for it to turn into military alliances. The next World War was brewing.

The Washington Naval Treaty of 1922 between the U.S., the British Empire, France, Italy and Japan limited the construction of capital ships. It forced the country-signatories to review their naval doctrines and seriously reconsider using aircraft carriers as the backbones of their fleet as opposed to battleships.
Only 15 years later, in 1937, Japan used its recent military build-up to launch a major attack on China. Japan quickly overwhelmed all opposition with an innovative use of aviation.

Japanese successes were marred by the fact that in December of the same year, the Japanese air force attacked an sank an American warship. The Japanese claimed that it was an honest mistake, and the crisis did not lead to immediate consequences. However, the relations between Japan and the U.S. quickly began to turn sour.

After the war began in Europe in 1939, people in America were divided on whether their country should take part or stay out. Most Americans hoped the Allies would win, but they also hoped to keep the United States out of war. The isolationists wanted the country to stay out of the war at almost any cost. Another group, the interventionists, wanted the United States to do all in its power to aid the Allies. Canada declared war on Germany almost at once, while the United States shifted its policy from neutrality to preparedness. They began to expand their armed forces, build defense plants, and give the Allies all-out aid short of war.

In September 1940 the Tripartite Pact was signed in Berlin. It solidified the relationship between the three Axis countries: Germany, Italy and Japan. Germany crushed all opposition in mainland Europe by June 22,1941. It took them only two years. Deciding to abandon the plans to invade the British Isles, the Wehrmacht attacked the Soviet Union and quickly advanced into Russia on all fronts.

At the same time, Germany's ally Japan invaded French Indochina. In response, the U.S. embargoed the sale of scrap metals to Japan, and then expanded the embargo to all oil and gasoline exports as well.
This began the long and fruitless process of Japanese-American negotiations during which both sides repeatedly stated their willingness to resolve all conflicts through diplomacy.

The Japanese continued to consider peaceful solutions until the last moment. On November 26, 1941, with the negotiations still ongoing, a Japanese task force of six aircraft carriers Akagi, Kaga, Sōryū, Hiryū, Shōkaku, and Zuikaku departed Northern Japan and headed for Hawaii. Their target was Pearl Harbor.

Guadalcanal Campaign

The Battle of Midway cost the Japanese dearly. All four aircraft carriers of the Japanese First Carrier Striking Force were lost. Hiryū, Kaga, Sōryū, Akagi, nearly 250 aircraft, and more than 3,000 naval personnel, including many experienced Japanese pilots, were lost.

The Americans lost the aircraft carrier Yorktown and 307 men. Altogether, the Americans launched 10 attack waves against the Japanese fleet. The first 8 were unsuccessful and the last 2 brought an overwhelming victory.

This battle marked the end of the first phase of the War. The Japanese lost their aircraft carrier superiority and would never again dominate the Pacific. Early in the war they had ten carriers to the American three, forcing the US Navy to adopt a defensive strategy while 3 more carriers were being transferred from the Atlantic. This had allowed the Japanese to operate at will.

In the meantime, the Japanese continued with their attacks on the Solomon Islands and New Guinea. They had already constructed a new floatplane base in Tulagi and strted building an airfield at Guadalcanal. By July of 1942 Australian troops fighting in the Kokoda Track campaign successfully repelled the Japanese attack in New Guinea.

If allowed to complete the airbase on Guadalcanal, the Japanese would turn the island into a powerful outpost that would hinder all U.S. operations in a wide area. Operation Watchtower was launched to stop the Japanese planes. 75 warships and nearly 3000 Marines were sent to the island. They were opposed by only 900 Japanese troops. And while the Americans had good intelligence on the Japanese forces on the island, the other sided did not even suspect that an invasion was imminent.

All at the same time, the Philippines Campaign was approaching its final stages.
The first land campaign of the United States against Japan - the Battle of Iwo Jima - took place from February 16 to March 26, 1945, and ended in victory for the American side. The Battle of Saipan

In the autumn of 1914, the island was occupied by Japanese forces and remained under the control of Japan until July 9, 1944, when it was captured by U.S. Marines.
The Battle of Saipan was the first U.S. offensive in the Mariana Archipelago and began with the bombing of the island on June 13, 1944.
On June 15, 1944, the 2nd and 4th Marine Divisions and 27th Infantry Division landed on the island. The 43rd Division of the Imperial Japanese Army opposed them and, with no hope of reinforcements or resupply from the outside, decided to fight to the bitter end. The Japanese counterattacked during the nights of the 15ht and 16th. On June 18, they abandoned the airfield on the south side of the island and took up position in the mountainous part of Saipan, a place more suitable for long-term protection thanks to the island's huge number of caves, in which the soldiers would hide while preparing for the next nighttime attack.
At sunset on July 7, the Japanese, unable to retreat, made a desperate final assault. Three thousand people, including many wounded, raised their flag and charged into their last battle. The fifteen-hour fight eded with the final defeat of Japanese forces on the island as well as the destruction of the 1st and 2nd battalions of the USA's 105th Infantry Regiment.
On July 9, Admiral Turner reported the capture of the island of Saipan. The Japanese officers left on the island committed suicide.

Battle of the Philippine Sea

Despite enormous losses in planes, aircraft carriers, and experience pilots sustained in the Coral Sea and at Midway in 1942, the Japanese still hoped to recapture the initiative and pass to the offensive. meanwhile, the Americans kept on taking strategic island bases, proceeding to Japan faster than anticipated. By late 1943, Japan's "outer" defensive ring was practically destroyed.
By the summer of 1944, the USA started to implement their plans of proceeding to the west and taking the Mariana Islands, the first one being Saipan.
The Japanese command had initially planned to attack the US fleet in early 1944, but the finalized plan was approved only in early June and then adapted within several weeks after the American fleet had been detected heading for Saipan. The Japanese planned to attack the US ships using not only carrier-based aviation (they were inferior to the Americans in its quantity) but also aircraft from the Guam base.
The Japanese fleet was sighted on 15 June by an American submarine, which allowed the US fleet to get prepared for a battle. On 19 june in the morning, the Americans started to launcher their air patrols from aircraft carriers, but Japanese surveillance aircraft stationed on Guam had spotted the American fleet prior to that. At 8:00 a.m., the Japanese launched the first-wave attack consisting of 69 aircraft. More than half of the Japanese planes were shot down by the Hellcats that had been flown out to intercept them, and those that survived and broke through to the aircraft carriers did not cause any damage. The second wave was launched by the Japanese at 9:00 a.m. and consisted of 128 aircraft that did not yield any significant results either; moreover, only 20 of them managed to come back. The third wave of 47 aircraft was almost completely destroyed too. The last wave was launched at 11:00 a.m. and consisting of 69 aircraft was also unsuccessful. At the same time, the Japanese fleet was attacked by two submarines: USS Albacore sunk the carrier Taiho after the first have had been launched, and USS Cavalla destroyed the carrier Shokaku about noon.
After four unsuccessful attacks, the Japanese fleet started to withdraw in the north-north-western direction. On 20 June in the afternoon, the American fleet sighted Japanese ships and launched over five hundred aircraft against them to be withstood only by 35 Japanese fighters. many ships were damaged, and the light aircraft carrier Hiyo was sunk. However, the returning American pilots had to land in the dark, which resulted in the loss of about 80 aircraft.
The battle's outcome was devastating to Japan. 476 of its aircraft were destroyed in battle and on carrier decks. They could not make up for such tremendous losses until the very end of the war.

The Battle of Guam

On the morning of December 9, 1941, just three hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Japanese air forces began a series of bombings on the island. The next day, the bombardment continued, and on December 10, Japanese troops landed on the island and captured it in a quick and short attack, losing only one man. Thus the last of the Mariana Islands came under the control of Japan.
On July 21, 1944, the United States began an operation to liberate the island from Japanese control. The operation ended victoriously on August 10 of that same year. Japanese troops fiercely resisted the Americans and refused to surrender even when their position was hopeless. As a result, they were almost completely destroyed. Eleven Japanese soldiers chose to retreat into the jungles of Guam and were soon forgotte, assumed dead. it was only in 1972 that Sergeant Shoichi Yokoi, the last survivor of the group, was discovered by local residents and returned to Japan.

Battle of Peleliu

The Caroline and Mariannas Islands, excluding the island of Guam, belong to Japan before World War II began. In 1941, after capturing Guam, the Japanese controlled the entire region.
In the summer of 1944, about 30 thousand Japanese soldiers were stationed on the islands.
In the Mariannas-Palau Operation, American forces had to capture Angaur and Peleliu in order to shut down the Japanese air attacks on the flank of the American forces trying to reach the Philippines.
So, on September 15, American troops landed on Peleliu, and on the 17th, they landed on Angaur. But although the fight on Angaur went well, and the island along with its airfield were captured on September 30th, the fight for Peleliu was long and hard. The Japanese used underground paths to reinforce their troops and did not engage in open conflict.
The Americans quickly captured the airfield, but bloody battles for the rest of the island ensued, in which they lost about 2,000 troops and an additional 8,000 were wounded or missing in action. The battle continued until November of 1944. After two months of fighting, the USA finally had complete control of the island.
The capture of Peleliu allowed the Americans to prepare for an offensive against the Philippines.

Battle of Iwo Jima

A small military garrison had been on Iwo Jima even before World War II started, The Japanese started to strengthen the defence of the island in 1944, after the Battle of Kwajalein. The Iwo Jima radar station made it possible to spot the approach of American bombers long before they reached large cities, and the airbase allowed to intercept enemy aircraft and perform raids. The island's strategic importance was so enormous, as the Japanese an the Americans both understood. In the summer of 1944, the island's local population was evacuated. The military contingent cocтaвил exceeded 5,000 by this time. A network of defensive fortifications were built on the island, including tunnels burrowed. The Japanese were quite extensively prepared to defend Iwo Jima.
The Americans made air and sea attacks on the island since 15 June 1944. On 19 February 1945, their landing on the island was started, preceded by bombings and firing from vessels.
Despite using their tunnels skillfully and sabotages, the Japanese had to retreat permanently. On 23 February, the Americans managed to take Mount Suribachi and raise the US flag there; on 26 February, they took Motoyama Airfield. The island was considered take on 16 March, but the Japanese still launched attacks. The island was officially proclaimed to be taken on 26 March 1945 when the American forces repulsed the last counterattack of Japanese forces and sustained large losses.

Battle for the Kuban

The region became one of the priority goals for German command because of its location, and large amount of subsoil resources, including oil. Invading Kuban would have deprived the USSR of the natural resources essential for the war and allow Germany to establish control over the Caucasus.

While Army Group B was fighting at Stalingrad to cut off communications between the Caucasus and European Russia, Army Group A moved southward. From August 1942, many important Soviet cities were taken in a series of bloody battles in the Kuban. On September 11, Novorossiysk fell. However, the German Army suffered heavy losses and was thus forced to assume the defensive.

Meanwhile, the war reached a turning point for the Red Army at Stalingrad. By 1943, the Stalingrad (South) front was posing a serious threat for the Army Group A rearward area. on January 1, 1943, the South front forces launched a counteroffensive.

Korsun-Shevchenkovskii Operation

The Korsun-Shenchenkovskii Operation was a part of the Dnieper-Carpathian operation, which aimed to liberate western Ukraine. It was conducted from January 24 to February 17, 1944.

By the fall of 1943, Soviet forces had taken the eastern bank of the Dnieper and the bridges, which allowed them to cross over to the western bank. On January 16, the Red Army took Kirvograd, an important communications center for the German army.

The 2nd Ukrainian Front began the offensive on January 24, and on January 26th the 1st Ukrainian Front began to make its way to meet them. By February 3rd the fronts had encircled the enemy. Sixty thousand troops were surrounded and began to depend on airlifted supplies. However, Soviet air forces fought the supply aircraft.

Over the next two weeks, the Germans repeatedly tried to break out of their predicament and by February 17, with help from the outside, a portion of the army managed to escape with heavy losses.

The operation was then completed. Two German corps were destroyed, and the rest retreated.

Battle of Stalingrad

In the summer of 1942, things on the front were tense once again. After their success at Moscow, Soviet High Command suffered losses at Kharkov and lost Rostov-on-Don, as the Southern army continued thier advance in two directions, to the south (group "A") and east (group "B").

By the end of July, Paulus' 6th Army had made it several dozen kilometers from Stalingrad, and by the end of August, he had reached the Volga and taken the river's right bank. By that time, only a quarter of the city's population had been evacuated. The remainder worked on constructing the city's defenses.

An intense, protracted conflict began as the armies battled for every street. Houses were turned into fortresses and their surroundings into minefields. By November, the German army, having suffered heavy losses, had taken 90% of the town, but this didn't stop the conflict. The Soviet army held critical points of the city, protecting the factories and manufacturing facilities that were still operating.

Battle of Stalingrad, winter

As the Germans continued their gradual movement into Stalingrad, having taken the western coast of the Volga, Soviet Command sent more troops into Stalingrad.

On November 19, 1942, a new offensive began on the Southwestern and Don fronts, called "Operation Uranus." ON November 20 the offensive reached the Stalingrad front. Soviet forces fought to retake the lost ground and routed the Romanian armies. After heavy fighting, Soviet forces surrounded the German army, which now retained less than half of the Stalingrad territory the 6th Army had won during the summer assault.

However, further fighting was long and slow. The Germans held well-defended positions, waiting for reinforcements from the outside. In the middle of December 1943 the Don army, under the command of Erich von Manstein, trie dto break through to the 6th Army but, because of heavy losses, was stopped 30 kilometers away. On December 23, a retreat had to be ordered because of the critical situation on the front at Chirsk.

The Battle of Stalignrad ended on February 2nd, when Paulus' 6th Army, cut in half by Soviet troops, dissolved completed and its remaining soldierswere captured.

Mozdok-Malgobek Defensive Operation

By the end of August 1942, the German army had captured most of Kuban. One after another, they had seized Krasnodar, Armavier, and Maykop. The 17th Army, proceeding further south to Tuapse, was stopped by Soviet troops, but the 1st Panzer Army continued to advance eastward, intending to seize the oilfields of Baku and Grozny.
Thus the German army came to face the Soviet line, which was evenly spread over the entire front on the bank of the river Terek.
The battle began on the night of September 1, when German forcese launched a series of diversionary attacks east of Mozdok. On the morning of September 2, with the help of air support and artillery, German troops began crossing the Terek River south of Mozdok, overwhelming the few Soviet troops in the area. They seized a bridgehead on the right bank of the river and advanced another 12 kilometers south. Soviet command responded by sending reinforcements from its reserves and from the areas unaffected by the attack, forcing ht enemy bak north 9 kilometers.
But the Germans were not about to give up and, with the support of their motorized Viking division, they captured several settlements by September 29. Nevertheless, they had suffered heavy losses and were unable to advance further.
The Soviet attack had forced the Germans to defend their position. The advance towards Grozny was halted.

Mediterranean Theater

The Mediterranean Theatre of World War II covers the events of 1940-45 that took place in the Mediterranean Sea and on its coasts: Italy, Southern France, the Balkans, the Middle East, and North Africa. Active military operations began immediately after Italy declared war on France and Great Britain on June 10, 1940, and as early as June 11, Italian bombers raided Malta, where a British military base was situated. When German Army Group C surrendered in Northern Italy on May 2, 1945, military operations in this area ceased.
The main countries that participated in the conflict in this area were Germany, Italy, Great Britain, France, Greece, Yugoslavia, Croatia, the First Slovak Republic, Albania, Bulgaria, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Iran, Iraq, Hungary, the USSR, the USA, and and many others.
The missions of this section cover the military operations on Malta and on the eastern coast of Sicily.

Siege of Malta

On June 11, one day after Italy declared war on Great Britain and France, bombers from Sicily attacked the Grand-Harbor, Hal Far, and Takali airfields. At the time of these air raids, the island only contained a small British garrison of 4000 and 6 Gloster Gladiator airplanes. Italy, aiming to invade Greece and fearing an attack from Malta, continued intensive bombing.

By 1942, carpet bombings of Maltese towns and airfields by the Italian aviation, supported by Luftwaffe, left Malta almost barren. There was a great lack of ammunition, provisions and aircraft fuel. A few convoys that were sent by the Allies from Alexandria or Gibraltar were able to reach Malta. The air and sea blockade of the islands was only lifted by 1943 through a series of dangerous operations, the most noted of which was Operation Pedestal. the renewal of supply lines and restoration of Maltese aviation allowed the island to become an important base for containing Italy in the Mediterranean and, later, for the landing in Normandy.

Korean war

Following its victories in the 1894-95 Sino-Japanese War and the 1904-05 Russo-Japanese War, Japan could spread its influence on Korea unhindered. As such, on 17 November 1905, Japan and Korea signed the treaty making Korea Japan's protectorate. However, after long debates if Korea should be annexed, the supporters of full annexation won, and another treaty, the one annexing Korea to Japan, was signed on 22 August 1910.
The treaty formally expired in 1945 when Japan lost in World War II: Soviet military forces occupied the northern part of Korea whereas the Americans took the southern part. The country was divided along the 38th parallel. Both the northern and southern parts had their own governments installed. The initial plan was to unite the country subsequently, but when the Cold War started, it prevented the USSR and the USA from negotiating that.
Meanwhile, the rulers of both parts of Korea believed that they must unite the country under their leadership.
On 25 June 1950, the North Korean People's army invaded the territory of South Korea and occupied practically the whole of it almost with lightning speed. However, the main goal of the offensive was not reached: the South Korean government managed to leave the occupied Seoul and request help from United Nations countries.
After the Western support was give, South Korean forces launched a counter-offensive on 15 September 1950. By late September, it became completely clear that North Korean forces were defeated and that the occupation of the whole peninsula by South Korean and American troops was only a matter of time.
In October, China declared that it would support the DPRK, and immediately brought its troops into the territory of North Korea, calling them "Chinese People's Volunteers", to be on the safe side. The USSR also started to give support to North Korea, first of all with finances and equipment, and also by sending a significant contingent of military pilots and consultants to help.
By July 1951, the war had reached a deadlock, as neither side could gain any strategic advantage. The front line was practically stationary over several months. Since the war became positional, it was decided to try and conduct armistice negotiations that continued for two years. As a result, North Korea, China, and UN representatives signed a cease-fire agreement. South Korean representatives refused to sign any documents with their northern neighbour, and they were not even present when the agreement was signed.
Military operations were ceased on 27 July 1953, although the war was never officially declared to be over up to now.
