General info

Panther Ausf. F in the garage.

The Panther F is a Rank IV German medium tank with a battle rating of 6.0 (AB/RB) and 6.7 (SB). It was introduced in during the Closed Beta Test for Ground Forces before Update 1.41. The Panther F introduces a new Schmaltürme turret for the Panther design. However, the hull design is largely unchanged from the Ausf. G variant.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Features new narrower turret.
  • Armour is stronger on the sides, turret front and sides.
  • Turret roof armour is 40mm thick.
  • Hull roof armour is adequate enough to withstand strafing.
  • Armed with the KwK 44 which has a faster firing rate than the previous Panther models.
  • Access to range-finder.
  • Stock gun is arguably more accurate than it's Russian and American counterpart.
  • Good turret rotation.
  • Similar BR as the A and G variants with an increased advantage that it has faster reloading gun and better armour.
  • Very strong when hulled down.
  • Commander is less exposed due to shorter commander's cupola.

Cons:

  • Despite the new turret design, the gun mantlet and turret front still offers good target for opposing tanks.
  • APCR is basically useless.
  • Smaller turret means more cramped crew, one shot will usually kill all the turret occupants.
  • Turret armour is relatively unangled.
  • Sides are littered with ammo racks.
  • Hull roof armour is a downgrade from the G variant.
  • Slower turret rotation than the G model.
  • Lower glacis is a weak spot.
  • 10 mm of additional thickness to the side doesn't really help that much.
  • Reverse speed is still bad (4km/h).

Notes:

  • Suspension wheels and tracks are 20 mm thick. The interleaving wheels mean that some places have a cumulative effect in the effective armour.
  • Tracks and lower side of the hull are covered by 5 mm thick armour plate, protecting them from HEAT and HE shells.
  • Rear parts of the upper side hull armour have tracks attached to it, adding additional 20 mm of armour.
  • A 30 mm RHA plate separates the engine compartment from the crew compartment
  • Belly armour is 16 mm thick.

History of creation and combat usage

Development

Despite its good performances, Hitler and others were concerned about the Panther tanks lacking enough armour on all sides. The current Panther had a 80 mm thick front glacis, but side armour was 40 mm and the top armour was only 16 mm at the rear. In January 1943, Hitler and his peers called for more armour, with the front glacis plate increased to 100 mm, and side armour to 60 mm, and the top to 30 mm, calling this the Panther II. He wanted production to start at September 1943. Dr. Wiebecke from MAN proposed a complete redesign of the Panther II to use Tiger II parts, though the total weight would increase to 50 tons. Meetings in February on the Panther II incorporated many designs and suggestions, such as using the 88 mm Kwk 43 from the Tiger II onto the Panther II and such, but that idea was rejected. MAN believe the first prototype could be made in August 1943. All this planning for the Panther II started before the Panther even saw combat. In the end, the Panther II was cancelled with priority on the production of the Panther tank. The sole Panther II chassis constructed in the program was captured by the US and displayed in the Patton Museum of Fort Knox with a Panther Ausf. G turret.

Panther Ausf. F

Though the Panther II died, upgrades were still planned for the Panther tanks, such as a redesigned turret. This redesign was noted to be started since November 7, 1943, with further changes by Rheinmetall in March 1944 and was named the Turm-Panther turret, or the Schmaltürme turret (which means narrow turrets). This turret used a modified 75 mm Kwk 42 gun, called Kwk 44/1. This turret had a much narrower front that is 120 mm thick, side armour was 60 mm and the roof was 40 mm thick. The turret gun mantlet now looks very similar to the one used on the Tiger II heavy tanks. This new turret was to be installed onto the Panther and called Ausf. F. A number of the Panther Ausf. F was built by Daimler-Benz and Ruhrstahl-Hattingen, but is is unknown if they ever saw combat before the war's end.

Several of the Panther Ausf. F Schmaltürme turret that were built were captured by the Americans and British. One surviving example in a damaged state is in the Bovington Tank Museum of England, as it was used as a range target before its significance was realized.
