General info

Panzer III Ausf. N in the garage.

The Pz.Kpfw. III Ausf. N, or the Panzer III N, is a premium Rank II German medium tank with a battle rating of 3.0. It was introduced in during the Closed Beta Test for Ground Forces before Update 1.41. A Panzer III Ausf. M body with the short 75 mm cannon on the early Panzer IVs, the Panzer III N is an attempt to keep the Panzer III relevant in the face of the evolving tank technology.

The main purpose, usage and tactics recommendations

General play style

The low velocity gun reduces effective combat to a range of less than 300m. The rapid reload and decent damage of this gun makes it deadly at short ranges. Against heavy tanks such as the KV-1, you should use HEAT ammo, and aim for clean plates of armour with the least sloping. Switch ammunition as neccesary, APCBC ammo is definitely superior in terms of damage, but only the HEAT shells can reliably penetrate enemy tanks. Against other tanks you should get two shots off while they get one into you, so aim for critical components of tanks.

Use the speed and armour to outflank your enemy, then engage at short range. Try to pick your opponents, prefer lightly armoured vehicles, or slow heavier tanks, with weak side/rear armour. Avoid heavy tanks, and other Pz.IIIs with spaced armour, as your HEAT shells will be useless against them, and AP ammo won't be able to penetrate them frontally.

Specific enemies worth noting

Counter-tactics

When against this tank, aim for the two weak spots; the drivers hatch and machine gun port. If either o these two points are shot, the tank is crippled or destroyed.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Good frontal hull armour.
  • Powerful gun.
  • Good Rate of fire.
  • Great gun depression.
  • Highly manoeuvrable.
  • Some protection from HEAT and HE.
  • Premium vehicle, earns more RP/SL per battle.

Cons:

  • It has either low penetration (AP ammo) or low post-penetration damage (HEAT ammo).
  • Turret doesn't have extra armour plate; stronger hull has weak spots.
  • Bad accuracy and huge arc at long range.
  • When using HEAT ammo, inability to shoot through various debris, small trees and fences (and spaced armour).

History of creation and combat usage

Development

The Panzerkampfwagen III medium tank, or the Panzer III was developed in the 1930s. Starting in early 1934, Heinz Guderian set down some specifications for a new tank, which Army Weapons Department took up to design the tank to weigh no more than 24,000 kilograms with a top speed of 35 km per hour. This tank's role was to be the main tank of the German army and was expected to destroy opposing tanks, as opposed as a tank made to destroy anti-tank guns and opposing infantrymen, which the Panzer IV took up in.

Damlier-Benz, Krupp, MAN, and Rheinmetall produced prototypes meeting the specifications and the Damlier-Benz model was chosen after testing in 1936-1937. The Panzer III model used a leaf-spring suspension in its early models (Ausf. A - Ausf. D) before utilizing a six-wheeled torsion-bar suspension in the Ausf. E and beyond. The Panzer III had a crew of five people, the commander, gunner, loader, driver, and assistant driver. The best feature of the Panzer III during its introduction that is the most overlooked was the three-man turret, which was not as common at the time. This frees the commander to be able to effectively command the tank while maintaining situational awareness rather than be burdened by the role of a loader or gunner, improving combat effectiveness of the tank. Despite this rather advance design, the turret did not have a turret basket for the crew. It was a proven design and production began in May 1937. The total number of Panzer IIIs tanks constructed in its production life was 5,774 units (excluding StuG III variant).

Specifications

Late in World War II, it is clear that the Panzer III is no longer a sufficient weapon system to use in the front line due to being outgunned and under armoured. The Panzer III was relegated to secondary roles. One such role was the infantry support tank that originally belonged to the early Panzer IV tanks, but was phased out of it with the upgunning of the Panzer IV tanks into tank-killers. Since the Panzer III could not mount a large gun, due to the turret ring size, it was switched over to an infantry role as the Panzer III Ausf. N with the short 75 mm KwK 37 howitzer originally mounted on the Panzer IV. The tank featured all the armour benefits from the Ausf. M variant, with 50 mm hull armour with 20 mm offset armour and Schürzen side armour skirts. Though no longer lethal against tanks, the Panzer III found a role it could play on the German front for the army.

This adaption of the Panzer III from the primary tank-killing vehicle at the start of the war to an infantry support is not only a testament to how tank technology advance quickly, but also on the versatility of the Panzer III design. Even late in the war, it was still being used as a weapon by being constantly upgraded with better guns, better protection, or modified completely to fit a different role more efficiently than its original. Even when phased out of service, its chassis was used as the basis of Germany's most lethal tank destroyer, the StuG III.
