General info

Neubaufahrzeug in the garage.

The Neubaufahrzeug is a premium Rank I German medium tank with a battle rating of 1.3. It was introduced in Update 1.51 "Cold Steel". A multi-turret design with the main gun on top and machine gun turrets on its corners, it is a unique design with a healthy amount of crew members, but is lacking in armor.

The main purpose, usage and tactics recommendations

General play style

The Neubaufahrzeug is not well armored but has more crew to compensate, much like the T-28 and T-35. Similarly to these tanks, its main gun is capable of instantly destroying most tanks it faces. Unlike the T-35, it has much better turning capabilities. Its secondary gun can also be dangerous, but it's a bit harder to aim as it doesn't have its own reticle. Keep an eye on how much of each ammo type you have left on your secondary gun- but don't forget you have it! Try getting used to how to aim the secondary gun, and fire it while you're reloading, or simply just keep firing both as they reload should the enemy not be destroyed. The 37mm cannon can and will destroy enemies, don't underestimate it!

The Neubaufahrzeug looks similar to the T-35, but it is a lot better at turning. It travels at about the same speed. Unlike the T-35, its secondary turrets are all machine gun turrets. It does have a secondary gun, but it's mounted on the same turret as the main gun.

Counter-tactics

If you're facing this tank, keep in mind that if you disable its main turret, you will disable the turret for both its cannons, leaving it with nothing to fire back but machine guns if the cannons are not facing towards you. Beware that its main cannon deals a lot of damage. It does not have as much crew as the T-35, but it still has a notable amount.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Despite being similar to the T-35, it is classified as a medium tank so it has access to Artillery Support.
  • The main gun is excellent, capable of instantly destroying many tanks it faces.
  • The secondary gun provides extra firepower, and is effective.
  • Maneuverable for its size.
  • Good gun depression.
  • More powerful engine than most tanks in Rank I.

Cons:

  • Only about as armored as the reserve tanks.
  • Slow turret traverse speed, the machine gun turrets also have slow traverse speeds.
  • Turns slowly when idle.
  • Fairly large profile.
  • The secondary gun is not on a separate turret.

Modules and improvements

History of creation and combat usage

Development

In 1930s, during Germany's remilitarization as protest to the Treaty of Versailles, it was known that a heavy, breakthrough tank must be made for the new style of armored warfare. The vehicle would by large, armored, and with multiple turrets to engage the enemy. This was in conjunction to other projects undertaken by other countries for such a vehicle, notably the Soviets with their T-35 heavy tank design. The development started as the Neubaufahrzeug, which means "new construction vehicle" as a cover as they were still unable to produce "tanks" legally. The contract for the Großtraktor (heavy tractor) was sent to Rheinmetall and Krupp and this was the codename for the heavy tank in production. A British spy by the name of Norman Baillie-Stewart assisted the design process when details of the British Vickers A1E1 Independent, a British multi-turret heavy tank, was leaked to them.

Rheinmetall and Krupp produced prototypes that were largely similar except for the weapons placement. Both had a 75 mm KwK L/24 howitzer as the main gun and the secondaries with the 37 mm KwK L/45 anti-tank guns. In Rheinmetall's design, the secondary guns were mounted above the 75 mm gun, while the Krupp design had the secondary gun mounted on besides the gun. Both designs used a secondary turret that were mounted in front and behind the main turret, which were adapted models of the Panzer I turret with their machine gun armaments only. The Rheinmetall model was called the "PanzerKampfwagen NeubauFahrzeug V" and the Krupp design was called the "PanzerKampfwagen NeubauFahrzeug VI". Though meant to be used as a heavy tank role, the designs were too complex and unreliable to be used in the battlefield, especially in its intended role. Development continued though to gain insight on the mult-turret design. By 1934, Rheinmetall built two prototypes with mild steel armor and with their turret design. By 1936, Rheinmetall built three more with regular armor and using the Krupp turret instead. Despite that, the tank never saw full-scale production and so was kept as a propaganda tool in Germany.

Combat usage

The tanks were used in the German invasion of Norway under the Panzer Battalion "Special Purpose" 40. Three tanks were sent to support the invasion and advanced through various paths into the country. Two were immobilized by mechanical problems and so only one was able to reach the front lines. At Balberg, the tank was put in action on April 22, 1940 against British and Norwegian positions. However, the tanks were found to be easily penetratable by the British Boys Anti-tank rifles, and the tank suffered dozens of hit, including one crew member death. The tank had to retreat and stayed there as its inadequacy was realized in the situation presented, letting other German units push forward and flank the British forces.

After the Norway Campaign, the Neubaufahrzeug tanks were sidelined as they were inadequate to even primitive anti-tank weapons. Despite that, its said that the three tanks saw combat during the opening stages of Operation Barbarossa against BT-7 tanks in present day Ukraine under the 1st Panzer Army. However, the tanks were ordered to be scrapped in 1941, which was carried out in 1942, and so none of the tanks made survived the war, only a few parts.
