The MiG-15bis is a Rank V Soviet jet fighter with a battle rating of 9.0. It was in the game since the start of the Open Beta Test prior to Update 1.29.

General play style

The MiG-15's instrument panel.

The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15bis is a single-seat jet interceptor and air superiority fighter, optimised for bomber interception but also capable of contesting airspace against other jet fighters. It is also capable of carrying bombs and rockets for destroying ground targets.

Vehicle characteristics

The MiG-15bis features the Klimov VK-1 turbojet engine, an improved version of the Klimov RD-45 (reverse-engineered Rolls-Royce Nene). This powerful jet provides an outstanding thrust-weight ratio, blessing the MiG-15bis with excellent climb rate and acceleration. Air brakes are also fitted for rapid deceleration. Against these are the MiG-15bis' relatively poor roll and turn rate, dictating a vertical fighting style.

Armament consists of one 37 mm N-37D and two 23 mm NR-23 cannon. The NR-23 has a higher rate-of-fire than the NS-23 used on the preceding MiG-15. Both are very powerful weapons that can inflict massive amounts of damage if they hit. Unfortunately, aiming the cannons requires considerable skill and practice due to the relatively slow velocity of the rounds, further exacerbated by the limited amount of ammunition carried.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Great acceleration
  • Superior climb rate
  • Powerful armament
  • High G-Load Tolerance of about 13 Gs
  • Great in vertical manoeuvres (high thrust to mass ratio)
  • High service selling
  • Excellent high altitude performance
  • Easy to avoid unintentional spin with joystick

Cons:

  • Sluggish roll rate without boosters, else just low roll rate at high speeds
  • Control surfaces are highly stiffening at speeds over 800 kph
  • Hard to aim due low velocity guns, combined with a somewhat wide spread (stock guns) and the painfully low roll rate at combat speeds
  • Low amount of ammo (40 37mm and 2×80 23mm cannons)
  • Poor Forward Visibility in cockpit
  • Poor Glide Ratio
  • Sluggish to initiate and recover from snap spins due to low rolling effect from yawing
  • Overheats often, although can be temporarily cured by reducing throttle for a few seconds
