The MG 131 is a 13mm German heavy machine gun used on aircraft in a variety of mounts.

Second from the top (gunner version with grip and trigger). In comparison aginst contemporary designs the advantages of the Mg131 become obvious: Lighter weight and diminutive. It could easily fit in the place of the predecessor Mg17. Although the increased heat generation required improvd cooling aid. As seen in bulges with the Bf 109 G-6.

History and development

The MG-131 was a fully automatic plane-mounted auto-gun made by Rheinmetall-Borsig. It was one of the smallest weapons in its category- it was lighter than the M2, Breda, and Ho-103. This allowed the weak 7.92mm MGs in the cowling and nose of the FW-190 and BF-109 to be replaced, as the 13mm MG-131 was light and portable. Thus, the effectiveness of the guns in the German planes was heavily increased while the impact on aerodynamics was minimal.

It was used in the JU-88, BF-109, FW-190, HE-111, and many other planes. It saw much use, as it was more effective than the US M2 Browning while weighing much less.

In War Thunder

In game, due to its exclusive presence in the late-war BFs and FWs, it is not that much more effective than the early 7.92mms, because the later-war opponents you will face will have more armor and protection than the earlier-war planes.

The MG-131 still makes an effective last-ditch weapon if you are out of your cannon shells in a BF or FW. However, compared to other weapons, it fires like a cannon, meaning that it has a very angular path as it fires. Use of the Omni-Purpose or Tracer ammo is not recommended, as the tracer rounds are much brighter than the 7.92mm shells- just like a cannon.
