The main purpose, usage and tactics recommendations
General play style
As with every SPAA vehicle, your role is to keep the skies clear of enemy aircraft. You can do so quite effectively with your twin 40mm Bofors, found on previous American AA vehicles. However, these are not ordinary Bofors. They are upgraded postwar models, boasting a surprisingly fast firerate for a 40mm weapon. The shells are also equipped with a radio-detonated fuse, meaning putting a shell within 6 meters of an aircraft with cause it to proximity detonate, sending shrapnel into the aircraft's control surfaces. These shells, combined with the good muzzle velocity of the 40mm and radar, make this vehicle excellent at taking out aircraft and AGM lobbing helos at long range.
The M247 is based off the chassis of an M48 Patton Medium tank. This comes with both pros and cons. The chassis is good off and on road, and is armoured enough to withstand aircraft autocannons and other SPAA from the front. However what compromises this is the very large turret containing the radar and Bofors, along with 3 of the 4 crew. This turret is very tall, taller than a lot of tanks currently ingame. Any smart player will aim for your turret, killing your crew or detonating your circular ammorack below the turret. However, at 8.0 your hull armour will not stand up to many high-penetrating rounds, so it is best to stay behind your team and avoid all ground conflict all-together. However the Bofors can pack a punch in a pinch so if you gain the enemies side, load AP and light them up.
Specific enemies worth noting
Most, if not all tanks at your battle rating will be impenetrable from the front, even with AP, so your best choice is to attempt a flank around them. However, you shouldn't really be fighting tanks anyway, save your somewhat limmited ammo for shooting at offending aircraft and helos.
Although based on a 7.7 tank, the M247's hull armour is nothing to sneeze at, your best shot is to go for the very big and exposed turret, and aim for the breach if facing it from the front. If you are facing it from the side aim slightly below the turret to detonate the ammorack.
Pros and cons
- Has radio fuze shells
- Bofors cannons have good firerate
- Huge turret is a massive weakspot
