General info

The M8 Greyhound in the garage.

The Light Armored Car M8 (M8 Greyhound) is a gift Rank I American armoured car with a battle rating of 1.3. It was introduced during Update 1.73 "Vive la France" as part of a vehicle giveaway on War Thunder's 5th anniversary.

The main purpose, usage and tactics recommendations

General play style

The M8 Greyhound plays very similarly to the M22 Locust. These vehicles both have the same characteristics and derive on the same playstyle; using your speed as your armour. Due to such, it is recommended when using the M8 Greyhound to capture points and provide covering fire or "boom and zoom" tactics. The armour is very fragile and can be penetrated quite easily, usually rendering only one or two crew members alive. The best option is to try get in a few shots at your enemy before retreating from the area you have attacked since you will not be able to take a hit.

Tactics

Specific enemies worth noting

Almost all rank one vehicles can penetrate your armour. Although there is a chance you might bounce a few APCR from the sides since you have spaced armour. Also when fighting early french tanks they can not usually penetrate you from the front due to there extremely low penetration. Most will kill crew members but some vehicles can wipe out the entire vehicle within one short burst or one shot. When playing, you must be careful of anything that has a clip/magazine such as the T-60, Gepard/Flakpanzer I or Sd.Kfz 140/1. It is also possible to face daunting enemies like the Panzerjager I, Sturmpanzer II or M8 Scott. These can ,and in most cases will, cause a hull-break. However, all these enemies can usually be penetrated by you as well, making both sides very daunting. The most likeliest threat in this scenario is the M8 Scott, this is because of the competitive reload rate of , in worst cases, 3 seconds or so.

Counter-tactics

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Very fast.
  • Has the M6 version of the 37 mm gun, which has higher penetration than the M3 version.
  • Quick firing 37 mm gun.
  • Equipped with a .50 cal machine gun.
  • Turret front is quite armoured.
  • Ammo racks in hull are hard to hit by accident, have to be specifically targeted for a detonation.
  • Spaced out crew with separate plate of armour between the driver/assistant driver and the gunner/loader.
  • Spaced armour on sides can bounce/absorb must low rank French shells.

Cons:

  • Open top, vulnerable to aerial strikes and artillery shrapnel.
  • Thin overall body armour.
  • Armoured car wheels are poor in cross-country.
  • Tall mounted .50 cal machine gun could compromise low profile.
