General info

The Leopard A1A1 (L/44) in the garage.

The Leopard A1A1 (L/44) is a gift Rank V German medium tank with a battle rating of 8.7 (AB/RB/SB). It was introduced in Update 1.81 "The Valkyries".

The main purpose, usage and tactics recommendations

General play style

The Leopard is a lightly armoured tank that will rarely - if at all - bounce or absorb any shots from any tank at its BR without taking serious damage or losing a crew member or two. As such, it is recommended that the player take advantage of the Leopard chassis’ above average mobility and relatively low vehicle height to hide behind rocks, dips in the terrain, or battlefield debris.

Sniping from afar is one of the better uses of this vehicle thanks to its laser range finder and the devastating punch and accuracy of its Rheinmetall Rh-120 120 mm gun that will have no problem penetrating the entire frontal arc of an IS-7 even from more than a kilometre and a half away.

Vehicle characteristics

The most distinctive feature of the Leopard A1A1 (L/44) is its Rheinmetall Rh-120 120 mm smoothbore gun that it shares with the Leopard 2k, Leopard 2A4, and the Type 90 armored fighting vehicles. This is arguably the most powerful gun in the Leopard A1A1's tier and BR of 8.7 with a flat-out penetration of 417 mm with the DM13 APFSDS round.

Secondary features which distinguish it from the standard Leopard A1A1 are laser rangefinder above the gunner's station and the modified gun mantlet with reduced armour to make room for larger 120 mm gun.

Tactics

Shoot and scoot should be your primary tactic using this vehicle, making use of the Leopard chassis's above-average mobility and speed to get behind cover and make use of the -9° of gun depression that is superior to the Soviet tanks that you will typically be facing.

The addition of a laser range finder on the Leopard A1A1 L/44 provides a distinct advantage, allowing near-instantaneous distance calculation as compared to other tanks which take precious seconds that could be used instead for taking aim and firing, so be sure to make full use of this as it can mean the difference between life and death in a long-range shooting match with other tanks.

Take advantage of the 120 mm gun’s massive post-penetration damage when firing the DM13 APFSDS round. A shot to any part of any tank is sure to cause massive damage and knock out several crew members even when shot from the opposite end.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Fast and agile like Leo A1A1 despite having a bigger gun
  • 120 mm L44 cannon instead of 105 mm L7A3 canon
  • Access to DM12 HEATFS with 650 mm of penetration and DM13 APFSDS with 417 mm of penetration it can penetrate all tanks frontally
  • Access to a laser rangefinder
  • Despite having a bigger gun the reload rate hasn't changed
  • Very cheap repair cost
  • Premium RP/SL bonuses and all mode are fully unlocked

Cons

  • Turrets additional front armour is removed because of the bigger gun
  • Armor is still the same and can be penetrated by any tank it faces
  • Very easily one shotted
  • Zoom is worse compared to other Leo A1s (x12 instead of x16 but not much of problem)
  • Turret rotation is slightly worse compared to Leo A1A1
  • DM13 is very expensive (900SL)

Notes:

  • Suspension wheels and tracks are 20 mm thick.
  • The turret mantlet has a varying thickness of 45 - 200 mm thick. It is its thickest near the center.
  • 20 mm of track armour added onto front hull glacis
  • Hull roof is rated to be 54 mm effective against HE.
  • The Leopard's armour is not enough thick in the game to defend the tank from hits. Lots of shell types are able to easily penetrate and destroy the tank. But the Leopard 1 was originally built for a perfect Standard tank idea, like the Main Battle Tanks. In the new Era, the armour has been considered expendable many times and stated that the speed and the armament, if enough to make real damage in the enemy lines, is the most important. Therefore the Leopard's armour design was only meant to withstand 20mm calibers. A big threat is the ZSU-57, which gives any Leopard 1 a hard time with its high RoF and for the Leopard deadly caliber of 57mm.
