General info

The Leopard 2A4 in the garage.

The Leopard 2A4 is a Rank VI German medium tank with a battle rating of 10.0 (AB/RB/SB). It was introduced in Update 1.79 "Project X".

The main purpose, usage and tactics recommendations

General play style

Vehicle characteristics

The Leopard 2A4 is a relatively old member of the world-famous Leopard MBT family. It sports the usual characteristics of a Leopard MBT, which is a blend of great mobility, good protection and excellent firepower. The Leopard 2A4 is easily recognizable by the sloped frontal armour, the slightly raised engine deck and its long, rectangular turret design. The Leopard 2A4 fields the widely used 120mm Rheinmetall L/44 cannon, which comes with a variety of high performance ammunition and is equipped with great optics. The Leopard 2A4 is able to traverse the battlefield with relative ease and is a true beast when it is manned by a skilled player.

The Leopard 2A4 is fitted with very good frontal protection that allows it to survive a lot more punishment than its previous relative, the Leopard 2K. The 2A4's turret armor can successfully withstand most chemical munitions fielded by other countries (however, the hull is highly vulnerable to some chemical and almost all top-rank kinetic munitions).

Tactics

The Leopard 2A4 is one of the most widely produced Leopard 2s, and diverging from its predecessor, the 2K, and as characteristic of most MBTs, maintains good armor protection. At its BR, maintaining situational awareness and ambushing enemies where possible is a must. The 2A4 can hold its ground in most situations, due to its composite armor; however, a well placed shot in one of its weak spots (see below) will be able to knock it out, or cripple it. Use the Leopard 2A4's speed to set yourself up in an advantageous position (hull down, if possible), and use your gun to snipe enemies. If multiple enemies are present, it may be wise to reposition after the opening shot.

Specific enemies worth noting

  • T-64B/BV: The T-64BV is dangerous, as the ERA blocks covering the front and sides of the vehicle render it invulnerable to Leopard 2A4's HEAT-FS round on the first shot.

Counter-tactics

The Leopard 2A4 possesses some of the most unforgiving weak spots for a Rank VI MBT. The Leopard's gun mantlet only offers around 305 mm of protection from Chemical rounds, and 365 mm towards Kinetic ammo. Penetrating the gun mantlet will lead to the guaranteed loss of the cannon breech and at least one crew member (Depending on how low the shell hits). Another weak spot is the large rectangular optic mounted on the right hand side of the turret, which is easily penetrated by Kinetic munitions and will usually lead to the loss of the Gunner, Commander and Cannon breech. The lower plate is also vulnerable, as any penetrating hits will kill the driver and possibly detonate the massive ammunition rack next to him. The vehicle also lacks any composite protection on the sides or rear of the hull.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • 120 mm L44 gun with access to the DM23.
  • Incredibly fast turret rotation.
  • Very easy stock grind, but will have problems against vehicles with ERA.
  • Fast and maneuverable.
  • Cheaper DM13 shell price than the Leopard 2K.
  • Fast and nimble.
  • Top of the matchmaking.
  • Arguably the best top rank tank in the game when used properly.
  • Very strong and competitive lineup for Germany along with the Leopard 2K.
  • Decent armour, mobility, and excellent firepower.
  • Good gun depression.
  • Front section of the hull sides are protected by 100mm composite side skirts which grant temporary protection against low caliber SPAAs (they fall off after some shots).
  • 15 rounds of ammo in the ready rack and the ready rack is protected by blowout panels.

Cons:

  • Gun mantlet is weak and shots there will disable the gun breech, though there are no crew members behind it.
  • Optics on the right side of the turret are a prominent weakspot.
  • Weak hull armour when compared to the T-64B and the Abrams.
  • Somewhat more sluggish than the Leopard 2K.
  • Ammo rack beside the driver.
  • Lacks the 20 mm autocannon found on the 2K and the KPz-70 - more susceptible to aircraft, and has to fire main gun on light vehicles.
  • Once you have expended the ready rack, you have to wait for a long time to fire another round, and even longer to replenish ready rack.
  • If your turret ammo rack is destroyed you will be set on fire and assuming you survived the ordeal, your ready rack will be empty making you combat ineffective until you replenish the ready rack.
