The Ki-44-II otsu Shoki is a premium Rank II Japanese light fighter with a battle rating of 2.3 (AB/RB/SB). It was introduced in Update 1.55 "Royal Armour".

The main purpose, usage and tactics recommendations

General play style

The Ki-44-II otsu is primarily a fighter/bomber hunter given its extremely powerful (yet low velocity) 40mm cannons and excellent performance.

Vehicle characteristics

At 2.3, the Ki-44-II otsu has performance matching that of planes 2.0 BR higher. Its climb rate and top speed is simply unrivaled by other aircraft at 2.3. However, it pays a price for this in the form of its armament, which consists of two low velocity 40 mm cannon and two 12.7 mm MGs. The 40 mms are excellent when they happen to strike an enemy aircraft, which is unfortunately rare given their extremely low velocity and firing arc. On the other hand, the 12.7 mm MGs it has aren't very effective even when they do happen to find their target, which isn't particularly difficult given their more predictable projectile paths.

Tactics

One strategy to playing the Ki-44-II otsu is to play it in a squad at a higher BR than 2.3. At 2.3, highly maneuverable planes such as the Hurricane and F4F run rampant, making it incredibly hard to secure kills before running out of ammunition, in spite of the 44-II otsu's excellent performance.

Otherwise, BnZ tactics should be utilized seeing as the Ki-44-II otsu handily outperforms everything at its battle rating.

Specific enemies worth noting

No vehicle is a threat at 2.3 BR besides the rare P-39N-0, which is still inferior in performance.

Counter-tactics

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Great engine power and speed for its BR range.
  • Excellent climb rate for its BR range.
  • Good armament overall.
  • Devastating 40mm auto-cannons.
  • Great acceleration.

Cons:

  • Limited ammunition for the 40mm cannons.
  • Low velocity projectiles for the 40mm cannons (only 295 m/s) making them the only aircraft guns with the slowest muzzle velocity in the game.
  • 40mm cannons are extremely inaccurate.
  • Fragile flaps.
  • Fragile landing gears.
