J2M2 Raiden in the Garage.

The J2M2 Raiden is a Rank II Japanese fighter with a battle rating of 3.7 (AB/SB) and 4.3 (RB). It was introduced in Update 1.49 "Weapons of Victory".

The main purpose, usage and tactics recommendations

General play style

The J2M2 is a very different aircraft to experience, coming from the A6M series; It is much faster, but not nearly as maneuverable. One should stick to Boom and Zoom tactics when using the aircraft, as It can out-speed much of what It faces off against. However, like most Japanese aircraft at low tiers, It is still rather frail, so you should avoid taking many hits. Fires are especially deadly to the J2M series. One could also try some bomber hunting with the J2M2, but be careful with your aim, you have slightly less ammunition than the A6M2, and be wary of the enemy turrets, the only armour the aircraft has is a sheet of bulletproof glass protecting the pilot.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Very powerful engine at its rank
  • Steady and stable in flight
  • 3.3 BR in AB is low for what it's capable of
  • Offers a new play style for the Japanese tech tree, enabling players to learn the curve of other heavier Japanese planes like the A7M, Ki-84, Ki-61 and the later N1K
  • Basically a J2M3 in Rank II, minus a pair of cannon
  • Can somehow survive and even perform well into 5.0 matches, some feats not many planes can achieve
  • Can carry bombs immediately without researching
  • Very low RP requirements to research modules
  • Ludicrously good rate of climb
  • Very good dive speed
  • Doesn't lock up that fast
  • Very good energy fighter
  • Turn rate is not that bad
  • Small compared to other fighters it faces
  • Very nimble
  • Reasonable repair cost
  • Good for Boom and Zooming.
  • Has armour protection, something great for a Japanese plane.
  • Cannons are very destructive at < 400 m, a second burst is enough to obliterate a fighter-size target

Cons:

  • Limited cannon ammo with only 200 rounds total, requires trigger discipline
  • Strictly plays only air to air role, carrying bombs is ineffective use of the aircraft
  • Inefficient against heavy bombers, primary targets should be enemy fighters or attackers
  • Bad horizontal maneuverability, compared to it's A6M stablemate, better to stick with Boom & Zoom and energy fighting
  • Poor rear visibility
  • 7.7 mm machine guns are least effective
  • The slightest amount of damage will adversely affect your planes performance

Modules and improvements

History of creation and combat usage

The J2M Raiden was the result of the Navy request for an interceptor, the need of which became apparent with the experiences with the American raid on the Japanese homeland shorty after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The Chief Designer was Jiro Horikoshi, who also designed the famous A6M fighter. However unlike the A6M, the J2M was geared for a completely different role, focusing more on rate of climb and speed, than range and maneuverability. This type had only a limited range and was solely used as an interceptor. The most important feat of arms came with the American B29 raids over Japan, where the J2M Raiden proved to be a real threat to the bombers, well armed, fast and large pools of ammo meant that despite a small number of Raidens, the 4 squadrons operating then were credited with the destruction of 21 Super fortresses during the later months of August 1944 to the end of the war. Furthermore the J2M2 saw limited action in the Philippines, although it was largely ineffective.
