History of creation and combat usage

Captured equipment

In the midst of the battlefield in World War II, wreckage and broken down equipment are often left behind by the army on the field due to either the inability to recover them or they are no longer operable. This equipment, if salvageable, was often taken by the occupiers and used for their own purposes. The Allies mostly captured German vehicles for use in gun tests and target practice, with the Soviets going as far as fielding captured tanks in their own ranks such as the Panzer III as the T-III. The German forces also captured Allied tanks as well, mostly fielding them in the Panzer forces to supplement the growing attrition of their armoured forces. After the disastrous Dieppe Raid in August 1942, the British lost about 29 Churchill Mk.III tanks on the beaches. The Churchill's combat debut ended up giving the German valuable information on what the Allies have. Another report had a Churchill captured in the Eastern Front, this is perhaps one of the 301 Churchill that were sent to the Soviet Union as part of the Lend-Lease program. Of these Churchills, only two were repaired and put into service in the Panzer forces.

Combat usage

There are no dedicated reports on the performance of the captured Churchill in battle, only evidence that they were indeed in use by the 100 Panzer Regiment. One of the Churchill tank photographed with German markings was commanded by Corporal Jordan and was nicknamed as "blondie".
