The IL-2M type 3 in the garage.

The IL-2M type 3 is a Rank III Soviet attacker with a battle rating of 3.3 (AB/RB/SB). It was in the game since the start of the Open Beta Test prior to Update 1.29.

Tactics

In combined battles, it is recommended to employ the rudder in turning after attack runs so as to not perform heavily banked elevator rolls, which expose a large surface of the plane and permit SPAA to shoot down the IL-2.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Incredibly effective at killing ground targets.
  • Can potentially carry games if left alone unchecked.
  • 23mm can shred planes and lightly armored tanks alike.
  • Fuselage is well armored.
  • Extremely durable.
  • Can fight other aircraft given enough advantage.
  • Can survive most head on attacks and escape with minor damage.
  • Rear gunner is very effective and is protected by armor.
  • Benefits really well from separate trigger for weapons.

Cons:

  • Hard to fly.
  • Long turning radius.
  • Cannot carry as many rockets as the earlier models.
  • A bit tricky to fly at low speeds.
  • Will start to bleed energy after a few tight turns.
  • Will not roll when exceeding 500 km/h or 310+ MPH.
  • No dive breaks.
  • A large target for SPAA vehicles.
  • Tail is easily damaged.
  • Underpowered engine means it will have a hard time gaining altitude/energy back from a dive.

Skins and camouflages for the IL-2M on WT:Live. Problematic is the generic search-term '#il2' which is used for all sorts of things. Read the description to make sure the skin is compatible, as the ingame 3D model had been updated in the past, rendering old skins useless.
