General info

The IL-2M (1943) in the garage.

The IL-2M (1943) is a Rank III Soviet attacker with a battle rating of 3.3 (AB/RB) and 3.7 (SB). It was introduced in Update 1.49 "Weapons of Victory".

The main purpose, usage and tactics recommendations

General play style

Much like previous IL-2s, this plane is made for ground attacking. The major differences include higher battle rating, slightly different ammo belts and armament, and being among the first IL-2's to have a rear gunner, with the IL-2-37 being the first. While you shouldn't depend heavily on the rear gunner to protect you, him firing will alert you to dangerously close enemy fighters. In AB, the gunner will occasionally do damage to enemy engines and generally be a nuisance to any assailants. In RB/SB, however, it is not uncommon for him to actually shoot down enemy fighters who linger behind you too long and fail to destroy you quickly enough.

Specific enemies worth noting

Any aircraft with cannons is a major threat, as the control surfaces on this modification have little authority when damaged. This can lead to a quick, uncontrolled decent into the ground.

Counter-tactics

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Great firepower when using AP rounds.
  • Impressive durability.
  • Good manoeuverability at low speeds.
  • Has a rear gunner that can deter weak aircraft

Cons:

  • The rear gunner does not have the best coverage.
  • The plane's large profile, combined with its slow speed, leads to the aircraft being an easy target.

Skins and camouflages for the IL-2M on WT:Live. Problematic is the generic search-term '#il2' which is used for all sorts of things. Read the description to make sure the skin is compatible, as the in game 3D model had been updated in the past, rendering old skins useless.
